Default Mod. 10-5 Nickel, Adjustable sights?

I’m not too sure of what to make of the Model 10 that I saw at a LGS yesterday... it’s a Nickel 4” pencil barrel square butt with adjustable sights. Serial number is D450862. Dealer said he got it from an older gentleman’s collection but had no further information. Here’s a few pictures:

It's even kind of a good look until one's eyes reaches the front of the frame at the sight's base. Then the amateurishness begins.

Someone added an adjustable rear sight to a model 10. It was not uncommon to add different sights back in the day.

Good luck

Heck; if the price is right, it would make nice shooter and conversation piece. The work on the sights looks pretty good to me

Checkered Model 27 sight, right?
Probably why bcmcgilvray finds the dubbed off front looking amateurish.

Looks like the original front, I wonder if it is tall enough for the adjustable rear.

So some Bubba owns a milling machine and decides to do some innovative work to a model 10? That cap screw on the end of the sight base is gross. YMMV but I don't like what was done to a decent revolver.

Not an uncommon mod back when adjustable sights were considered a target-only option.

Agreed the cap screw is ugly but it could be changed out pretty easily.

Looks like a good silver-soldering job to me! Perhaps you know better?

I think he is is talking about the front end of the slot milled in the frame for the rear sight.

Check the second shot of the second set of photos.

De gustibus no disputandum erat. Although the stock setup seems a little more elegant, the illustrated machine screw seems much more functional than the marginal screw used by the factory. As long as it doesn't adversely affect the sight picture, who cares? The main issue is whether you prefer a "pencil barrel" (standard barrel) or some kind of heavy barrel.

pimple on her shoulder. Who cares! She looks and shoots great.

That front sight reminded me of an old 44
picked up a three or four years ago.
This is my half-breed...second model into a third....
With abit of history.

Does look like a big Ole nasty Crack just under the barrel pin!!! I hope the op did not purchase this gun. A few or a few thousand could run the Crack the rest of the way leaving the barrel all loose and wobbly in the frame. Could be dangerous!!

I did not buy the gun, just snapped a bunch of pictures to post here. I figured it was a good “conversation” piece. I’ll check back at the store tomorrow, but I think what looks like a frame crack may be a shadow. But I’ll definitely be wearing my reading glasses when I go back, as I honestly did not look the gun over very carefully...!

The first Smith I ever owned was a blue Model 10 HB. I had watched a local cop, on my home town PD, put an adjustable rear sight and build a front ramp out of key stock and fasten it to the front of the HB. This was all done in the back of the local shop that I hung out in as a young men. This guy was know to trade his duty gun every couple of months and when he traded it in on his next project I snagged it! I carried it as a security guard, in my pre-LEO days. And later traded it for something I thought I needed more. (I don' remember what) I wish I still had it and have thought about building another. I have two HBs now and a rear sight. But probably won't ever do it. (After all they don't make blue steel, pinned barrel model tens anymore)

Having read the thread. I see several that think the conversion of the standard barrel is cool and some that think it is an abomination. Again I remind those who think the gun has been destroyed that: When the work was done, the standard barrel was the most common Smith out there and was but 1 of tens of thousands of its type. Nobody in the world ever thought they would stop making them. The guy wanted adjustable sights and figured out a way to make his gun into what he wanted. It is the way we did stuff in the olden days!

I just took a closer look at the pistol, with my glasses... NO crack what-so-ever. Actually, the pistol looks much better in real life! The front sight/frame fit is finished much better than it appears in the photo. Really, the only thing that really bugs me about the gun is the screw...
