Default Price value dilemma??

I am looking for some help/advice on what would be a good price on several S&W handguns? They have been in storage for the past 15+ years and before that they had been unfired!! There is a variety of models in both blue/nickel and barrel lengths. I got to inspect them yesterday and they are clean..BUT..the guns are all missing the grips?? A family member has them and they might be returned, this is an estate issues. Do I go by the book and/or current internet value, how much is deducted for the missing grips/boxes/tools etc?? Any help is greatly appreciated..

You should be able to get a good idea on prices based on the values in SCSW for the condition other than ANIB since they don't have boxes, or looking at prices that guns SELL for (not listed at) on Gunbroker or the Guns For Sale board here.

Yes, you do need to reduce each of them in value because of the stock situation. I would definitely try to remedy that and acquire/purchase them from the other family member. Values on many smiths can be reduced greatly without the right stocks. "Coke Bottle" stocks can reduce the value of a pre model 29 for instance by $500 or more, similarly a gun that should have later model target stocks - $150, and one that should have diamond checkered stocks numbered to the gun a good $200 or more. Unnumbered stocks on later guns such as a J or K frame would have less of an impact - $50-75 or so, but still an impact.

Why on earth did they take the stocks off?

Bottom line story, if they are like new/unfired you can't achieve near the full price on them without the original stocks.

Way too many variables to be of much help. The missing stocks are a significant issue especially if some of the revolvers are older guns when serial numbers were stamped on the right stock. Then there is the question of boxes and other accessories.

I'd bet if you get specific about exactly what you're looking at, with pictures, you're going to get some great feedback. A lot of these guys love speculating and ruminating.

Don't know why..can't figure out some people!! I have the latest SCSW book and was using that as a guideline. This gentleman is looking to sell them to defray some costs related to the family member who owned them. All the mfg dates are in the 1970's with the "youngest" being 1984..no "S" prefixes..

Try previous sales using the advanced search of ? models on GB it is a good reflection of what you might want to ask.

Shoot from the hip as it were... Test the waters by lowballing, you either come out with a great deal or pay up...

you have at least one advantage the time frame you stated are easier to find and not dated to the guns. The only one that may get costly to replace would be combat round butts.

If I'm not mistaken, that's technically an 8-3/8" barrel. And I think it's nickel. In another thread people were saying that's a pretty rare model and may be worth more than just a standard 29. But not sure without the stocks what the does.
