Default Date of Manufacture

My gun is a Model 65-1, serial # 1D34975, stainless steel, 357 Mag. with a 4 in. heavy barrel. It is a 3 screw fixed sight gun with a strain screw and a square butt grip. The date of manuf. and any info. will be appreciated.

My gun is missing all the internal parts. will the parts from a 38 special work in my frame including the extractor rod, center pin and the extractor. The 38 parts are from the same size frame with a barrel longer than 2 in. I am a novice what does SCSW 3rd mean.

The SCSW is a reference book, The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson which is currently in it's 4th Edition, it's the reference most of us use to try and get a date if manufacture when looking at a serial number.

In theory -- YES, internal parts from a S&W .38 revolver will work... but with a lot of side issues to be aware of. First, those parts need to be from a K or L-frame S&W .38, and from a modern and not much older "long action" revolver. If they are from a J-frame (5-shot) they will not work. Next... those parts were built to interact with each other and your best bet is if all or most of them have come from the same original gun.

The ejector rod and perhaps the extractor could pose problems with actually fitting properly and may require fitment.

It sounds like you have a big project on your hands. It is do-able, but many or most would find that spending $500-$600 on a fully functional used Model 65 would be a better use of time and energy unless projects such as this are enjoyable to you.

Boy I sure hope you have the original cylinder.

It sounds like you would be better off buying a functional gun rather than spending more money on the one you have.

If you have the cylinder that originally came with your 65-1 you will find it is recessed (i.e. counterbored) for the .357 magnum cartridge head. The extractor from a .38 Special will not be recessed so you'll need to find a matching extractor . . . or, better yet, find a complete cylinder & extractor. Good luck in your project.

Russ

edit to add: another issue is matching the threads of the .38 Special extractor rod you have to an extractor that matches the recessed .357 cylinder . . . they will both need to be either left-hand or right-hand threads. In general, pre-1961 those threads were right hand and post-1961 they switched to left-hand threads.
