Default Dating a SW Model 36 owned by Elvis Presley

I have a model 36 38 Chief Special with no 6J31XX.
It is engraved with a TCB logo. I shoot several times a year
and would like some information on this gun.

Can someone tell me the year it was made?

It has a TCB engraved on one side.

Thanks

Chris

What is the significance of TCB? I'm not a Pressley fan. Is that something that a fan would know about?

Does the right side of the barrel say, Airweight?

Swing out the cylinder and look on the frame. Do you see a model number, either M-36 or M-37? Is that why you think it's a M-36? If so, you certainly have a good small .38! (I have no idea what you know about guns. We get some real neophytes here. I don't mean to insult you.)

How about a larger, sharper picture? I can't see much of the initials. Is there a flower there, too?

Why do you think Elvis owned this gun? If you have proof, it's probably a valuable item.

Generally speaking, Elvis's guns and those he gave as gifts are pretty ornate.

I would think if you have actual provenance that Elvis owned this pistol it's value would be very high.

Probably a letter would not help. It's engraved thru the bluing so very likely done after market.

Welcome! Here is the form for the "letter" referenced above:

http://www.swhistoricalfoundation.co...quest_form.pdf

It may have been owned by him at some point but I would guess (based on other documented guns of his) it was a gift, as it is not quite as embellished per his usual tastes in personal firearms.

PS "Taking Care (of) Business".

Maybe it's the Mod 36 Elvis used to shoot out the screen on his RCA TV 'cause he didn't care for the way Robert Goulet was singing.

Pretty sure Elvis used a Chiefs Special for that.
I think the TV w/a hole in the screen sold for a good amt of cash at an auction!

But that TCB logo was pretty popular at the time to get engraved on anyones pistol, beltbuckle, ect. Lot's of quick work done at shows and fleamarket type afairs where it was simply cut thru the bluing or even nickel finish of a pistol. Sometimes highlighted w/coldblue,,or not.

Elvis had many high priced full engraved guns.
Many were done by Joe (Joseph) Condon of LasVegas, NV.
Joe was known by and used the bi-line 'Engraver to the Stars'
He did a number of guns for Elvis and a number of guns for Elvis that were done as gifts for other people.
Many had the TCB logo on them.

Lots of info on Joe Condon and many of the pistols if you start digging on the net about them.

Any gun that can be traced directly to Elvis's personal collection, especially a gun he personally carried, has gotta be worth a large fortune.

He did, and the 2" Chiefs he purportedly used is on exhibit in a restaurant in Reno, NV with a few others as you walk in the door.

There has been an engraved and I think, gold plated S&W at a couple of the SWCA meetings and it can be traced to Elvis.

Provenance is everything, and must be more than oral history. I was looking today at a Colt SAA in .32-20 that the owner claimed was owned by Tom Horn. Unfortunately for the owner, the revolver was made in 1907. Horn was hung in Cheyenne in 1903.

That gun could be "a hunk a hunk of burning love", but with out a letter it may be nothing more than a "hound dog". I can't help "falling in love" with that gun any way, but "suspicious minds" would say "return to sender". Ok I'll stop now before some one gets "all shook up".

Three-inch Chief Specials do tend to be seen by me as a "hunk of burning love." I get "all shook up" if I see one for sale, usually when I can't afford it, alas.

I especially like the M-60-4.

Elvis drove tanks in the Army, didn't he? Or, was he a tank gunner? If anyone can find the serial no. of his issued .45, that gun would be pretty darned valuable...

So, as they say, "buy the gun not the story." Some guns ask for extra scrutiny these days, Kar 98k SS marked rifles for example. To my old, cynical mind, anyone could have had that engraving done. Just my 2 cents.

He parked it across the street from Graceland at the Memphis airport. That was his personal Convair 880. Saw them both when I was in Memphis a couple of years after he "left the building."

I believe Presley was assigned to the scout platoon of either a mechanized bn or an armored bn. Scout platoons used wheeled vehicles. If I am correct I doubt if he would have been authorized a pistol by TO&E. In any case, the army has no reason to keep records of who was issued what weapon once that person has departed the unit.

There is an informative book recounting Presley's service in Germany written by his platoon leader; regrettably I cannot recall either author or title. In Germany Presley lived in private quarters with, I want to say his father. Because the latter was a dependent supported by Presley, this made Presley eligible to live off post. Aside from that legitimate perk, he was treated pretty much like other troops and was apparently a conscious soldier. He was discharged as a E5; at the time most draftees were lucky to make E4. The only problems his platoon leader mentioned were senior officers annoying him for introductions, and the necessity when going to the field for the unit to sneak off post to avoid ambushes by packs of screaming frauleins.

During my own service in Germany I recall an old German laughing about how every gasthaus in the Freidberg area bragged, "Elvis war hier!" This next may be apocryphal but I once met a soldier who 'knew someone who knew someone' (etc) who had seen Presley's reenlistment card, a form kept for every enlisted man showing they had received the required number of re-up pitches. Presley's card reportedly said, 'EM has multi-million dollar career in civilian life, so reenlistment unlikely.'

Thru the years I have seen a lot more fake things for sale that were connected to a famous person than real verifiable things. I am skeptical about this one but it's a cool gun anyway thanks for posting.

I saw photos of him as a tank crewman about 1960 in popular magazines, so thought he was a tanker. I'm pretty sure he was wearing a shoulder holster.

Does anyone else recall those?

I ain't so sure I'd of posted that on the 'net unless you've come into possession of it legally. I could see how you could have exposed yourself to a criminal investigation of receiving known stolen property.

Just a heads up...

Wouldn't a serial number trace link it to Elvis...or invalidate the assumption?

I'm sure S&W has records of huge stars who've owned its guns.

It all depends on where the gun was bought. If ordered with custom features from S&W directly it could, but if shipped to a distributor and then to a dealer before sale to him there would be difficulty tracing from S&W to him. Dealers 4473 forms don't go anywhere but at the dealer until they give up their license.

I toured that bad boy....it is (was) sitting across the street from Graceland . Where most metal would be chrome or nickle plated in an airplane...the Kings was all Gold plated . I believe the plane was moved so they could build a hotel.
At Graceland there are a few of his personal revolvers on display, and they look like things Elvis would have owned....be sure to check out the indoor "shooting range" .... I find that most interesting !

I’m reading that post to say that the Model 15 was stolen, not the box. If that’s the case, the pistol would be the stolem property and not the box, he’s fine.

There was a particular gun shop in LA(cannot remember the name) that Elvis patronized and bought most if not all of his handguns from so a letter from S&W should solve the issue.

Link to see photo of Elvis in tanker helmet and wearing a M-1911 .45 auto. I found other images of him in similar circumstances, too.

However, his name tag doesn't read, "Presley" here. No idea what it says, as some of the tag is obscured.

I was surprised to see that he had the old M1911, not the newer M-1911A-1.

What's that on his chest? Part of his radio equipment?

That is a cool pic of The King. Looks his tag starts with MAC, then hard to tell. Did he ever sing "Mac the Knife"?

Bought a couple of Moisin Nagant rifles at the height of the import craze, $79 each as I recall. All matching serial numbers. WWII years of production. Supposedly factory overhauled, looked brand new. They WERE brand new. I've worked in factories all my life, I know new from used. The stocks were perfect. The stamped serial numbers and proof marks had sharp raised metal where the stamps had gone in and displaced the metal. The guys who drank the Kool Aid on the surplus forums said, "No way, the Soviets took them all in and completely refurbished them after the war." Uh-Uh. You don't put a brand new unused stock on every gun you overhaul. Maybe one out of 20. Sharp edges on newly machined metal get worn down in the field and never becomes sharp again. They were making brand new Moisin Nagant rifles in the 90's and selling them as surplus. I bought mine in cosmoline. But eventually the store shelves were littered with them. Every one had sharp edges on the stamped lettering and brand new never dented stocks. I sold mine for $200 each ten years later.

All those "Last shipment found M98 rifles! Get them while they last!" Imported brand new from Russia. The Russians took the tooling when they defeated Germany.

Because it's an obvious troll thread. Come on--"King Creole?"
Why would anybody say he has a revolver owned by Elvis without saying a word about why he thinks that? Except for the "TCB" which is pretty much meaningless.

I went to a small local gun show last weekend and one vendor had a revolver supposedly belonged to Elvis. I think it was a model 36 nickel plated with pearl grips. The vendor also had paper work about the gun and Elvis military pictures and articles. All was in a display case with a note stating NOT FOR SALE.

I appreciate all of your comments. I have purchased over $10M of Elvis Presley memorabilia and sold out to Graceland in 2006.

I also own a 30-30 that he gave to Ed Parker (father of Kenpo karate) and a Sears shotgun that he purchased at Sears in 1967 and gave to his cousin.

The 3 guns that were at Sierra Sids in Reno, NV were also purchased by myself in 2015.

King Creole

These were the 3 guns that I purchased in 2015 for the Non Believers which I guess will still dispute.

The last pic is one of several papers relevant to the most recent deal that I did on the two .38 S&Ws.

Chris,

That was quite a collection! I guess then, you won't be opening a museum in Hawaii.

We got crushed during the 07-09 Crash. The option was only good for a certain time. They paid us out for not exercising that option. Would have been great. I just bought out the Elvis Museum that operated in Pigeon Forge which is where the last two handguns came from.

Can I get an exact year from you Hondo on the two guns?

Thanks

Chris

The second black .38 S&W no is R805XX.
Can someone please assist?

I believe I have tried to prove that I am
neither a BS guy or troll.

Thanks

Chris

6J31XX = 1771. Model 36, .38 Chief Special chambered for the '.38 S&W Special' cartridge.

R805XX = 1973. If it has a rd butt, it's a Model 32 Terrier, chambered for the '.38 S&W' cartridge.
If a square butt, it's a Model 33 Regulation Police chambered for the '.38 S&W' cartridge. (neither will shoot 38 S&W Special.)

A surprise ending. Not many people get accused of being trolls and then point to Wikipedia articles about themselves. Of course Chris could actually be Elvis.

Cool

TV Guide came in the early 2000s with a crew. I gave the staff the afternoon off so they could shoot the museum and myself in a variety of outfits. I was dumb enough to think they meant street clothes. They were hoping jumpsuits.

They were very disappointed to find out I was not and am not an ETA, Elvis Tribute Artist. They shot one picture of the museum and left disappointed.

Well, If I'm wrong I apologize. I just thought it was odd the way you stated the gun was owned by Elvis, but didn't say anything about why you were saying so. Sounds like maybe you're just used to having Elvis's stuff around. If so, then nice items!

Jim, I'm sure everyone realizes you intended 1971 and not 1771
