Nickel K22
I was at a gun show in Washington PA over the weekend. Dealer from south of there has a display with some nice Smith & Wessons of which he is very proud. He has a nickel k22, obviously not factory, but very nicely done. Blue box, asking $1495.
Now I really like nickel revolvers, but that price is too high for a gun with an aftermarket finish, in my mind.....so, I got to thinking, I could buy a finish challenged k22 for $500 to $600 and have Ford,s nickel plate it for another $300, and have myself a nickel K22 for under $1000......what do you think?

My factory nickeled mdl 18.......But it started life as BLUE 18. In the early 70's it was sent back to Smith and they nickled it. BIL has factory nickeled mdl 17 with RR & WO. It too was sent back to Smith. Nickeled and sight changed. They won't do that anymore.
Your quoted price seems very high.

My guess is the dealer has one of two plans for his gun. Either he wants to keep it or he's waiting for a sucker who can not tell it was refinished. Technically it is not fraud if they say nothing about the guns originality while listening to the buyer tell them how rare it is. Alternatively, I have had gun show vendors explain that the reason their prices are so high is that they are only there to snap up deals off people walking through. They were not in a selling phase but they'd make an exception if some ignorant person wanted to pay twice what their guns were worth.
I'd consider sending one of my K-22s to Ford's if nickel excited me more than it does.

I know of the gun your speaking of. I have looked at it here at a local gunshow. I like it but I think he needs to get at least under a grand.
I have a beautifully done factory renickle that I picked up on GB for 525.00.
K22s are out there factory redone not as as uncommon as you might think.
Here is mine with some Keith Brown grips.
Pardon the awful pics as I REALLY struggle to take pics of nickle guns

I don't think he is trying to defraud anyone as he has it displayed on the blue box which matches the serial number and clearly states that is was blued. I think your second premise is accurate. He has several high condition, high priced Smiths on the table and other low priced stuff, which seems to sell, so if someone wants to pay his price for the high end stuff, fine. If not, ok too. Maybe he is picking up pieces as well.

If I remember right he even has a picture of the frame showing the R-N
I found him forthcoming if you asked the right questions.

There was a nickel 17 at last weekend's show with asking price of $500. Seller quickly went to $450 when I showed some interest. Problem was everything was nickel and not all that well done. He still had it when I left.

Try indirect outdoor sunlight. Knocking off the shininess with coarse sandpaper might work too.

Local shop has a post war 2" M&P in nickel, including the hammer and trigger. He wants $700. If the gun had been left alone it might be worth that, half moon sight and original grips. I laughed and said I'd give him $350. He said he'd sell it on the internet. Second shop had a 1920s M&P, very nice except for an owners initials tapped onto the frame with some tool, it's $700 and "factory" according to the help. Consignment and owners will not bargain. So let the buyer beware.
