Looks like it should be a good shooter. Enjoy it.

They all have the smooth .312" Ranger trigger as well.

THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL REVOLVER, BILL. ITS SO NICE TO GET AN OLD POLICE GUN THAT HAS ADJUSTABLE SIGHTS. IMHO---THAT'S PRETTY RARE....

To the best of my knowledge, the .312" smooth trigger first appeared on the Texas Ranger M19 commemorative revolver.

While the TR Commemorative revolvers had smooth triggers, they were the target width, weren't they? The TR hammers were checkered and target width also.

The ones I've looked at, the plain ones, had the .312" smooth trigger.

That gun is a long way from “home”! I as a ( gladly!) former New Yorker now enjoying life in the free state of Arizona I keep an eye out for former NY agency guns, but have ever seen only a few in person ( even back when I lived in NY) and never at an acceptable price.

Perchance you don't want that beauty, I'll take it for safekeeping, non-matching grips and all, until you find the right grips.
You're welcome, twern't nothing.

I remember when the NYS Troopers went to the Glock, a lot of those NYSP 28s came up for sale for next to nothing. Those days are long gone, enjoy that 28-2.

When I used to order parts from S&W back in the 80s, it was called a Ranger trigger by them.

I picked one up here in Georgia a few years ago at a reasonable price. Love it.

From what I've read the NYSP issued these guns in '79-'80 prior to the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic winter games, so it may have seen service there.

[edit] FWIW - no numbers on my regular magna grips, but I'm pretty sure they are original.

Texas Ranger Commemorative Model 19's all had smooth combat triggers that were .400" wide.

The switch from .265" grooved triggers to smooth .312" triggers as standard equipment on many models took place in the early 80's, around the time the L-frames were coming out, I believe.

Texas DPS used to issue M-28's, but don't think they had the red insert sight or the wide, smooth trigger. (For once, New York actually did a gun thing better than Texas, )

They were issued to state troopers. Rangers got M-19's, but many carried whatever they wanted. Colt .45 autos were a longtime heavy favorite among Texas Rangers. May still be. I haven't checked in years. I've read that many like the SIG P-226 in .357 SIG, also used by DPS troopers.

I do like the "Ranger" trigger on my M-66-3, which is probably my favorite handgun of all time.

Bill-

Is that turquoise with the gun in your OP?

I think the 28’s were issued and in use from the late 60’s to very early 80’s. The troopers were going to replace the 28 with the 520, then S&W came out with the L frame and they got 681’s for a brief time prior to transitioning in about 1986 or so to Glock 17’s. One of the first big agencies to adopt glocks as I recall. The story goes that the 28’s were released on the surplus market and one was involved in a crime, so the state passed a law that former state police guns could not be surplused. I do believe they could still be purchased by a retiring officer however.
