Last month I paid out $1300 for a 27-2 in 90% condition.

I have resisted buy a 27, because I think they are overpriced, and there are lots of great 28's around. The 28 is a not as pretty 27, with less options. I would have paid a slight premium for a new 28, rather than 1300 for a 90% 27. Just me I guess

Too much for the 27 and 28. If buying a gun gets you divorced... guess I did it the wrong way!

I wouldn't trade my 28-2 6" for anything. Well, maybe...............
I wouldn't mind a portable redheaded dishwasher.

I've heard the factory's gonna discontinue production of unfired 28-2s & it wouldn't hurt to have a spare, if true.

Explain why please. If appreciation value, you 'll make WAY MORE investing that $$ in something else. If for the brag factor. What good is an old virgin?

They didn't but went ahead and showed them the gun. They put a value of $1200 on it and told me they would buy it straight up at 65 percent of value,
Talked some more and since the rest of my revolvers are stainless, and now that I have a 3" and 6" 629, but only a 3" 686p, I need a 6" 686p , he told me he would order in a new 6" 686p and do even trade for 28-2.
I think I will go back and accept the offer tomorrow. I will get more use out of a stainless gun, and both should shoot equally as good. I personally dont see the value of pinned barrels or recessed cylinders , nor believe the quality hype of 70's and early 80's guns being made with more care. Everything else made in America during those years was complete junk but somehow S&W had an elite workforce? Nah, both my brand new 629 trigger's are way better than the 28-2.

The 28 is over priced. Pass on it and look for another reason for a divorce.

Give her how much you spend. She will love it when you buy guns.
However, if it is your personal funds? There should be no debate.
There is my money and there is our money, or debt.
I would not sell my 28 for $800, nor would I trade it. It would take very hard times.

Hmmmmm,
I have never had to worry about the wife and gun purchase. When we were starting out and had no extra $, buying guns was the furthest thing from my mind.
Things are different now and I buy what I want. I decide if it is affordable. Then again I am almost 60 and it took a while to get here.
No gun is worth a fight with the wife in my house. Thankfully, she just rolls her eyes unless it is a J frame,, then I have to worry about a custody battle.
I know there are a lot of 28 fans on the forum and may catch friction for this, but I would not pay $800 for a 98% 4” 28-2.
The box is a total waste. It dont go with the gun so therefore it has absolutely no relevance. You could sell it on eBay or something, but you most likely wont get enough out of it to be worth your time.
Keep looking you will definitely find a better deal.

Would not be as an investment, would be as an appreciation of fine art to pass on down eventually.
And Bubbles has done a Hawaiian vacation for three years running without me, so it wouldn't be anything unfair to her. (She had a son there.)
Box is nothing, I'd be valuing the gun.
Could possibly even end up as a custom project.

Denis-
Don't let your editors or ad manager where you write hear that. Do you still write for gun mags?
I got bounced from writing for one of their titles, and I'm all but certain it was for not coddling an aggressive advertiser whose products I thought I'd given a fair share of coverage in prior articles.
Here, I'd pay maybe $650 for a M-28. I like them, and they often shoot fantastically. But you have a nice one and a nice M-27, which is prettier. Frankly, I think stainless guns are more practical. But you live in a state with less humidity than where I live. Still, even in a good lined holster, a stainless gun shows less finish wear than a blued gun.
If your wife looks much like VS model Devon Windsor and can cook like Devon does in her videos, better keep her.
If she looks like Joy Behar and is as contentious, good riddance!

I have several NIB revolvers. All of them are investments over a long time, but not short term. That said, i do think that nice examples of 28's are the next thing to move upwards. Why?? They are a poor man's 27, and 27's are getting nuts in price

Naw, she's not contentious at all.
Quite easy to get along with.
As far as the writing goes, I make no secret of my opinion that current Smith revolvers are not the equal of the older revolvers, while on the other hand I carry one of their M&P autos daily for my choice of concealed carry.
I'm entitled to my opinions, and they don't always make the makers happy.
But, as I've told more than one: I'm not their advertising department.
When I cover a new Smith revolver it gets a fair review based on features & merits, and I keep my personal opinions to myself.

Considering you'd lose at least half the guns in a divorce, I have to say it's not worth it.

Your wife would likely end up with the 27 and the 28 in the divorce settlement anyway.

A brand hew in the box 4" model 28-2 with a S serial number maybe.
My wife's got her job and her money. I got mine. I help here out at times. She does nice stuff for me at times.
But, unless the wife and I had had a serious heart to heart about money and guns and came to an agreement, if she got mad enough to divorce me over my buying a gun she can pack her stuff. I even help her load it up. I had most of my **** when we got married and in this state that means I keep it.
Probably just sell every thing, buy a new diesel truck. Build a serious storage shed on one of my brothers places. Then, load all my camping gear in my trailer and spend the winters moving from spot to spot on nation forest in New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada then move north to Montana, Idaho and Wyoming in the summer. I have a seriously nice tent camp setup.
Always have a backup plan.

Worth a divorce? Never!
$800 for a 28-2 six inch blued? And the box does not belong with the gun so I consider that pretty worthless. I think it's overpriced, even if it is a 100% condition piece. $600 to $700 would be a fair price, but not if it also came with a divorce.

Denis,
Guess it depends on your area, and how much you want to pay. As I said in another post (New vs Old) you never see them for around 500 - 550 in my area, and I've been looking the last few years for one I can afford at a decent price.
In East Tenn, the're going for 800+ for a shooter, not NIB. I'd really like to know where you can get a nice M28 for 500.

I'll probably pass, unless the owner drops down, in which case I think I'll have to divert money into it.
I have numerous Ruger GPs as workhorses, but there's something about the older Smiths that makes 'em hard to resist.
Especially unfired.
I was willing to spend $2100 on a 90% Triple Lock last year, because I'll never run across another one.
I was willing to put $1300 into the 90% 3.5 1961 27-2 recently, because it's a throwback to my first PD. One of my fellow officers wore one, and I've never run across that barrel length since.
I'd be interested in acquiring this 28-2 because it's unfired, and also a throwback to my first PD.
We had a deputy in the area who was quite a character, wore a 6-incher in a swivel holster.
Had to be a swivel holster, or he couldn't sit in a car with that long barrel.
Lotsa reasons for acquiring the old stuff, even if the buy-in's a little high.
