Someone converted your 28-2 from .357 mag to .44 spl.

TheModel 28-2 was not offered from the factory in this caliber, which is why you aren't finding very much information about it.

It wasn't at all uncommon for owners to have their Highway Patrolman revolvers converted to .44 caliber during that period. They show up from time to time.

Yeah apparently this happened quite a bit with 28-2s. There is one near me sitting in a pawn shop that was converted to .41 Magnum and nickeled (quite poorly I might add).

Just out of curiosity Oldman11, which barrel length does your modified Model 28-2 have? And which front sight (Patridge or Baughman)?

If it has a 6" barrel and a Patridge front sight, there would not be a whole lot of difference between it and a Model 24-3. The biggest difference would be the finish.

My 24-3:

I have a M27 that has been converted to .44 Special. I used a factory 6 1/2" target barrel that was later cut to 5 ". I also had a M28 that was converted to .44 Special using a 6 1/2" target barrel. Alan Harton in Houston did that one. I later sold it.

Sounds like a great addition, I too would have bought it for that price! Enjoy!

It has a four inch barrel with a baughman front sight. Did smith Wesson make a special run on 28-2 .44 special or did somebody convert a .357? I wish I knew how to send pictures but this old 75 yr boy is dumb on that.

I recently paid $640 for a model 28-2 that had been converted to 44 special using original barrel and cylinder. I have the reciept and target the gunsmith used in 1977. Its a great wsy to shoot 44 spcl with a pinned and recessed revolver. I would say your price is about the going rate for these converted guns. Mine coming with box and all paperwork including reciept of conversion helps me have a piece of mind about the conversion done and very well done at that.

Being an economic N frame platform 28’s were, and still are to some extent, commonly targeted for big bore conversion projects.

Yours probably looks very similar to this 24-3 4" that I have.

No offense intended, but you really should read the responses to your original question. Several of us have already addressed this issue. Please go back and read through all of the reply posts.

The serial number for your M28 conversion is on the butt. There is a letter prefix as well, either an "S" or an "N". This letter is part of your SN.

I’m sorry I gave the wrong serial, the real one is n277111. I really do not know much about guns do I. But I will say some of you are nice and some of you are rude. I thank you all for the information and I’ll try not to bother you again.

Edit,And I might add this forum is one of the best I check in every day and try to learn what I can. I am just now getting into the n frames. I have sold my k frames except one,the k 32 that I inherited form my uncle. Again this is a mighty fine place to learn from, thank you

I don't think any of the members are trying to be rude, but it does require a bit of effort on your part to understand that these people have a significant knowledge of S&W guns and it would be wise on your part to read what they have to say.

"I thank you all for the information and I’ll try not to bother you again."

Don't go away. Most of us would like to hear about how your .44 Special shoots. Also, the K-32 is a grail gun for many on this forum.

I got bitten by the .44 Special bug early on. I belonged to a gun club while in college and one of the members had a post WW II .44. At that time, S&W had discontinued the .44 Special about 7 years earlier. The ones I saw at gun shows were WAAY beyond my budget.

There was a group of us that had read Elmer Keith's Sixguns. We also haunted the magazine racks for the latest Shooting Times and Skeeter Skelton's articles on converting N frame .357s to .44 Special and .45 Colt. That's why I found a M27 to convert.

For the money I think you got a good deal on a shooting 44 special. If one had a 44 special barrel this would be a very simple conversion. Even reaming the cylinders is not difficult with the correct reamer. A decent gunsmith could make a common cheap at the time 357 into a big bore gun that was difficult to find.

Don't take any of the comments to personal, some of us are on the blunt side. Plus, there are lots of people who come here and make no effort to learn anything. Enjoy the place its great.

Is this what we stand for, that we make a senior citizen with self professed limited knowledge feel that he is bothering the rank and file? We should all be so lucky as to reach 75, and have the capacity to use the computer. One word answers like "seriously ", deserve a PM apology IMO. This happened to me at one point, and while I participate in threads, I do not start them any more. I would like to think that we are a brotherhhood, and sharing information is the prime directive, without making anybody feel belittled. Just my .02

If he is going to ask a question and then not bother to read the responses or take the advice then why even bother?

It was laid out pretty clear for him that it was a conversion and not a factory option by a few members.

We have moderators to handle all sorts of problems - and they do their job very well.

I hope the OP does continue to come here to learn and is not too put off by what has happpened in this thread. Oldman11, come back and tell us about your guns. As has been said, these days the K32 has become the object of a sort of cult following.

I had read a story by Skeeter Skelton about the .32-20 and went out and bought one. Over the years, I've owned a bushel basket full of .32-20 revolvers and rifles. I also have owned a number of .32 Longs and .32 H&R Magnums. Yeah, the .32s are addicting.
