Default Rosewood factory stocks question

I have done a search here but could not find a definative answer. It seems like the majority of these stocks have medallions with a silver/gold color to them. So is this factory varnish that got smeared on to them ... Silver finish which is coming off showing gold underlying color...or gold finish coming off showing silver underlying color. I only see this on the Rosewood stocks not any other factory stocks from this era.I know the factory varnish on medallions was more common in the earlier years .

I have found that most of the rosewood stocks from the 50s-70's seem to have a heavy finish that sometimes gets on the medallions. My thought is that the rosewood is so porous that they needed to have more coats (or some different type of finish) applied due to it being absorbed.

I bought my first pair of S&W rosewood grips in about 82 or 83 and they have the stainless locating washers. I have at least 10 pair of k and n frame rosewood grips and most had finish on the medallions none of my grips have the black washers. I used to buy any rosewood grips that I could find. Jeff

Nickel plated brass. With factory or otherwise varnish/finish applied. You can wear the finish and the plating off, then you got the brass color showing.

What you said made a lot of sense. The pair I have date to early 70's and have that gold in parts on the medallions .For years I have been tempted to clean the amber off , but was hesitant since they still have 99% of the factory finish on them.
