Default 29-2, whats the difference between N and S prefix?

As the title says,

Looking for the elusive, clean 29-2, blue, 6.5.

Found a few on GB.

I have seen "N" and "S" prefixes.

Whats the scoop?

Thank you for your time,
Varooom

The S serial# prefix was used till about 1970, the N serial# prefix after that.
Differences, only cosmetic.

The S prefix was used from the begining of the 44 mag in 1956 thru 1967-68. Most of the S prefix guns had diamond center grips and early ones had the much sought after cokes. Cokes ended around 1965. Don't believe there were any N prefix guns shipped with diamond center grips. The 29-2's ran from 1962 thru 1982, so 5yrs of S prefix and 15 yrs of N prefix.

S guns are far superior to N guns. Hands down there is no comparison in over all quality the fit and finish. The S prefix guns were just a higher quality build. If you ever get the chance put one of each in your hand side by side you will see and feel the difference. Its enlightening to say the least.

I have three mod 28-2s, a 6" #S289xxx and two 4" #N566xxx and
N586xxx. I wouldn't go as far as the above poster who said the S prefix
guns were far superior but my S prefix 28-2 is definitely better fitted
and finished than my two N prefix guns. Does this have anything to
do with the prefix or just the fact that there is ten years or more between
their manufacturing dates? Who can say for sure?

Well, there are S and N prefix guns, and there are S and N prefix guns.

From the start of S prefix .44 Magnum production until sometime in the early N model 29 range the polishing and blue work were visibly superior to later guns. So there is a big difference from an S 130000 range .44 Magnum and an N 600000 range model 29-2 - but probably not a big difference between a model 29-2 in the S 330000 range and N1.

OK, I could look this up, but I will take it as given that S guns went to say 1970. I will also stipulate to them being better than N guns. That being said, in general is there any credence to make the comment that all S&W guns were produced with the same quality and skill set up to the point that N frames started, including J and K ?

I think he is referring to only n frames.I have owned a few k frames form the early 60's and currently own one form 1965 and there is not a lot of difference that I could see other than a better polish on the finish.

If you really want to belabor the point the reality is that there are
many slight variables of build quality that make up a complex
mechanism like a S&W revolver that the average owner has no
knowledge of or means of measuring or testing. To pronounce
an S prefix gun "far superior" to an N prefix gun because to
your eye the finish looks a bit better is ludicrous. The idea
that S&W made a decision to lower the standards of N frame
magnum manufacture such as metallurgy and critical dimensions when changing the serial number prefix is a bit
much to swallow.

I believe this applies to all the N frames. My 28-2 that I bought
new in 1966 is S289xxx and my 25-2 that I bought new in 1970
is N67xxx. Someone with more knowledge about serial numbers
than I have might provide a more specific answer.

His question was what's the difference. If condition was the same the answer should be about double. Right?
