Estate Sale 29-2
I went to an estate sale last month where I purchased a 4” 29-2 that was in the wood presentation box and was unfired since leaving the factory.Pinned and recessed.
No turn line and no evidence of flame cutting. I couldn’t even tell if the factory test fired it . All tools, paperwork and even the blue cardboard box was with it . Price was a whopping $200.00.
The only problem was there was minor rust on the side that touched the foam.
You can see on the left side pic where the rust spots were on the cylinder. Minor freckles.
The presentation box and the blue box with all the paperwork and tools came in the cardboard box shown . The small turn line that it has now is from me shooting it .

My friend, that has GOT to be a candidate (top three, at least) for score of the century. Fantastic find and congratulations!

Thanks . There were two more 29-2’s there also . Another 4” and a 8 3/8”.
Both unfired and in the exact same condition with the presentation box and extras. I told a friend who wanted the 8 3/8” but we were too late .
Somebody got them both .

"Price was a whopping $200.00."
Are you saying that was the list price on the box, or what you paid?
Cue the calls for police intervention for theft.

The last estate sale I was at that had guns had a 19-3 for $1200. They probably looked at GB, found the highest mint in box one, and copied that. It was nice, but nothing like mint. I need to start going to estate sales where the O.P. lives. Congrats on a great buy!

I have a few in the same presentation boxes where the felt has deteriorated and softened the finish on the stocks. It kind of sucks.
Great score for sure.

If that ever happens again hold your hand over them and swing it in a circular motion. Say "I'll take these."

$200.00 is unreal. You did very well. The few estate sales I go to that have guns...get in line. Just like classic cars. Before you know it, prices are at retail or higher....

Nice Purchase
Wow, that was an unbelievably good score...$200! It's got to be worth $1000 or more (at least around here). I'll never understand why folks store their firearms in the boxes, particularly the flocked or velvet presentation cases. In almost all instances, the firearm suffers some damage over time, or the lining of the cases falls apart. I let my guns "breathe" on wire racks in the gun safe, and the cases are stacked away in the A/C. I suppose leaving the firearms in their cardboard boxes wrapped in VPI paper is OK, but I prefer to separate them. Maybe I'm just OCD!

Sometimes estate sales will have guns that haven't been put out for sale. Anytime I go to one of these sales I always ask if they have any guns they might sell. You would be surprised at what they sometimes bring out, especially milsurps. I've purchased several fine guns like this just because I asked.

I found this part interesting. While I don't know what S&W actually does or did back when that was made, certainly we have all HEARD it said that they test fire with proof loads.
Well, on more than one occasion with a brand new S&W, I've been able to actually see with the naked eye which chambers they elected to use.
It's easier on a stainless or nickeled revolver, but you can also see it on a blued one if you look VERY closely, and you have a lot of good light.
Try and really, really look at the front cylinder face, the end of the cylinder where the blast comes out. If it has never otherwise been recreationally fired, you should be able to see some scorching around the chamber(s) they test fired.

There is always a market for old gun stuff but splitting the gun from the goodies is perhaps the finest way to ruin the value of BOTH.
If you truly want money from the side stuff that you are sure you don't want then your best path to most money is to sell the entire package with the gun, use the proceeds to buy another gun without excess goodies you don't want.

I'm going to start doing that. There are a lot of estate sales in my immediate neighborhood... at least one every 2 weeks or so. I'm going to every one and doing just what you do, ask!
Nice score OP, the nicest I've heard of on this forum and any other one I'm a member of for sure!
The last Estate sale I went to three years ago...I picked up (2) mint, unfired outside the factory 70's manufactured "J" frames... I took both for $1100 and thought I was getting the score of the week before I realized it was an OK deal. Hell, who am I kidding... I'd do that deal again today!
The best score I got at an Estate Sale was I saw an "RPB" Branded, Mac-11 that needed a front pin, and mags. It was for sale for $100 as-is. I picked it up and immediately realized it was of the "open bolt variety" and said, I'll take it. I found/sourced (1) OEM mag for another $100 from a collector, and spent $40 on parts getting it back to fighting-fit shape. I was offered $900 plus paid shipping for it from a Mac-11 freak in upstate Illinois. I foolishly sold it before I realized they go for over twice that a lot due to the desirable "Open-Bolt" design, even though it was 100% semi-automatic! I should have sourced 3 more OEM mags and kept it. It had the smoothest recoil impulse that is hard to explain unless you've fired one. It never hiccuped not even once. The only downside is .380 ammo is d@mned expensive! Was a cool little gun...
Pic of most regretful gun sale I ever foolishly sold.
Faux Suppressor came with the Original $100 Estate Sale... With it attached it was like shooting a high powered "Squirt-Gun", zero recoil impulse, and surprisingly accurate when fired from the hip! Oh, I wished I'd never had sold this little baby!

I kick myself now for not taking all three. I actually went there just to look at some reloading supplies and not to buy guns .
