Just purchased Model 57-0 -Oddity?
Won an auction this weekend on pictured M57-0. There was a recent post on a 57-0 Double Stamped. This one also has the model number double stamped. It also has the cylinder stamped with an N having a dash through it. Did factory just get stamp happy?

Looks great! Well, I have nothing but pure speculation. The strike through could have been frugal use of available resources. They were going to make it a nickel gun, but blue was selling better? I've read where some 57's were shipped as 44 mags during a time of high model 29 demand and low 57 demand. Your 57 is from about 1975 or so, and that was just a couple years after the release of Dirty Harry. Again, it's all speculation. I'm thinking that revolver is a great candidate for a factory letter.

Very nice score on that model 57-0 SFIDEC. I watched that auction as the advertisement for a S&W model 57-0 caught my eye and thought it would go well with my model 57 and 57-1 and 57-2, 57-3, 57-5 , and 57-6. I still need a model 57-4 but now I see I also need a 57-0.

Guns aren't like coins or stamps. Errors in the stamped markings don't bring higher prices. But you have a beautiful 57 there, so I think you did well just by getting it in the first place. Congratulations!

I think I see a faint "2" under the 0 stamping, so chances are the frame was first intended for a 29 (or 25) -2 and the 0 was placed to cover the last original digit. Cool gun, enjoy!

It's hard to make out but it looks like it was stamped 28 or 29-2 under the 57-0.

My guess would be that somewhere in the assembly/stamping process it was realized that the assembler had screwed 57 parts to a frame that had already been marked 25-2 or 29-2 (probably 29-2 since it would be easy to mistake a 4" .44 for a .41). The marking was then somewhat polished out and overstamped.
...but with S&W who knows....
