S&W bluing
Hey everyone,
I purchased a well worn model 10-7 at a LGS that has a lot of police trade ins. I wanted a 4" pencil barrel and they had one for $270. I sent it to S&W to be re-blued in late May. I got it back about mid Sept. I chose the standard blue for $220 (there was also a $45 "range test and estimate" fee.) Needless to say it turned out beautifully. I really don't have time to restore the grips so I got a set of Altamont Super Walnut Crocback/Stipple with Silver Medallions. Here are the before and after pics

Beautiful. The bluing turned out very well.
I love the four-inch standard barrel, both for the retro cool and balance.

Beautiful job, I've always paid for the high polish, if I send another back, I'm going for the standard job after seeing your revolver.
After seeing the additional picture you posted below, now I know I'm going to send my 586 back for the standard job. Thanks.

Did a super nice job for the standard finish. Often wondered how good the newer bluing would look compared to the older bluing of the past. Looks like a great glossy finish. Heard in the past different chemicals used lately.

Watch out for ammonia.....
That's beautiful and I'd hate for it to be messed up by any product that has ammonia in it, including Hoppe's #9. It really messes up the color. Turns it somewhere between plum and violet.

Great looking revolver
Based on the price they charged you I think that was a good value for the money

I’m impressed at how sharp the stamping look. I’ve seen some that were really buffed out. Could have been the original condition that dictated more buffing though

I have to agree that it looks really gorgeous and your whole post is extremely useful as an example to anyone who has considered doing this.
Me? I think that all four pictures look awfully good, but if there was a 5th picture, that would be my favorite. Picture #5 would be exactly the same except next to the Model 10 with character would be a fanned-out stack of $20's that weren't sent off to S&W for a re-finish!
But that's just how I would do it, and the re-blue definitely looks amazing.

I have a Model 19 and a HB M10 begging for this.
Will they reblue older guns like a M31 no dash or a I frame?

If this thread had been titled ...Should I factory re blue this gun..many would have come out in groves to advise against it. Not that they would be wrong in their opinion. But many miss the point that a factory restored gun can give the owner a sense of pride rather then admiring someone else's battle scars.

That looks great and I've consider getting this done on a Mod 36 c.a.1970 so thanks for sharing the results.
Just and FYI Ithe S&W insignia under the cylinder release may have been modified and possibly your ampersand. None of which would bother me because I really like it.
Best Regards,
Kobsw

Cost works out to about what one in original condition with no wear would bring, assuming that you could find such a gun.
You broke even, less the waiting time for the work. And they couldn't quite get all the pitting off of the trigger.
Still, you now have a nice example of that model. Gee, we used to take them so much for granted...

At first I didn't like the stocks / grips. But they're growing on me. They seem like the checkering might work out well for gripping. Although I kind of like more on the heal too.
