Default Box question

I bought this Model 65 during the late 70's and happen to just notice that the information on one end of the box doesn't agree with the factory label on the other end. I bought it brand new from a GS so I guess this is the way it left S & W. So, is this a common occurrence?

Not surprising.

First 1D71716 is a 1979 serial number, so that fits the time frame you mentioned. I'll assume this matches the number on your revolver.

The fact that S&W slapped a Model 65 end label on a box originally intended for a Model 64 is nothing to get excited about. The shipping department used what was on hand, and these two models with 4" barrels would easily interchange with respect to boxes. They are the same basic gun except for the chambers.

The label rules. The embossed language on the box is irrelevant.

How about showing us the gun? Much more interesting than the box.

Very interesting, thanks for posting. This fits into my (admittedly limited) experience in the world of S&W that documentation / record keeping was pretty much an afterthought. "Sloppy" is the word that comes to mind.

Jack Flash

I don't think it was sloppiness so much as efficiency and conservation of resources. They used what boxes were at hand and put the appropriate label on them.

Thumbs up labeling.............

label looks legit, for the era and have seen them relabled for LE shipment,BUT it appears to be "upside down" from the norm.....
agree with above, "sloppy" or they were in a hurry for a "rush shipment" heck, we've seen them ship to LE distributors, in the box and the guns were ALL APART !!! came from the armorers school apparently, and grabbed some guns to fulfill the order ( In that case it went to Star Law in Conneaut,Ohio he called me when they came in............)

They POed me many years ago when I sent a gun in for service in the original box and it came back in a different box that was clearly not the original and missing the original label. I've never send a gun in for service in the original box since then.

Nothing unusual about an upside down label.
Here`s one on a `71 M 15-3.

Does the box number to the gun? If not it was probably in a dealers display case, and they grabbed the wrong box either by accident, or by just "It's a box...who cares."

I've been told the label goes on "upside down" because they store the gun with the top of the box down. That way when they pick a box off the shelf the bottom part won't slip out and dump the gun on the floor.

True? No idea, but it sounds good.

Thumbs up label....

Jim, yours is NOT "upside down" that is the way they were put on the end, so the lid would be on the bottom, so when they pulled the box off the shelf, the bottom , gun and all would drop out.........

the one on top picture from the OP , is upside down from the "normal" way that S&W did things............
