New Member: 13-1 circa early 1975
I have a 13-1 heavy 4" barrel with a combination of nickel plating and bead blasting finish. I am curious if this revolver was shipped from the factory as the original finish. There is also a number(33174) that is stamped on the yoke and on the bottom left side of the frame. Above the model number when the cylinder is open there is also a stamped(E 19). There is also NO S&W LOGO on either side of the weapon( (I realize that this could have been altered at some point), but the finish looks original. Any information that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. THANKS Bud

The Model 13-1, from its inception as an up-rated Model 10-6 through the introduction of the 13-1 (there never was a Model 13), was intended as a law enforcement working gun. Therefore, when nickel plated, the finish on the top strap and the top of the barrel was dulled to reduce glare. This was also the case with the blued finish. My original NYSP gun is configured that way.
It should be noted, however, that the standard Model 10-6 (.38 Special) with the nickel plating also has the "sand blast" finish on the top of the barrel. I no longer own a .38 Special blued Model 10-6, but those might have been finished the same way. I simply cannot remember.

Welcome to the Forum! I'm surprised no one has said this yet, but the serial number would help. You'll find it on the butt.

Welcome from Tennessee. What you describe could be a hard chrome finish akin to a “Robar” the finish that was popular in the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s before Stainless was popular. Many Police Officers like the finish for the weather resistance.
My 10-6 that was hard chromed back in the 70’s. It was a friend's Dad’s Duty Gun for a short while.
