Latest Model 28
Just picked up this 1968 " S " serial number M28 today.
No box or docs, and no original magnas, but that never stops me. Half the guns out there do not have original magna's. The grips are Eagle Heritage Walnut, more than suitable. if it had been fired beyond the factory, it can't be more than a couple cylinders.
Very fine example of a poor man's 27, but I love em. Some day I am going to get one, all worn, and have it blued.

Are those Eagle Heritage grips the ones they list as "reproduction Cokes" ? I have a set of those on my pre 25-2 and absolutely love the way they feel. Very nice gun!

I also recently picked up an M28 from 1968 (6”) and love the heck out of it. While I don’t know if the target stocks were original to it, they’re at least period correct. And in my opinion, I like my N’s wearing target stocks!

I agree on the targets. With my hands the magnas jut don't feel right.

I just checked mine. Model 28. Serial number 103097. anyone have info on when it was manufactured or details on it. Fun gun to shoot although 22LR often are hard to eject.

I believe they are. They are 200 a set. They appear to have the palm swells, and I believe they are the walnut, not the rosewood. I kind of like them. I have a spare set of targets, but i will save them for the next new gun I am not going to buy any more of

A 28 is a 357 mag. I think you may be talking about an 18?

My understanding is that they were an option but I don’t have the original box and haven’t had it lettered. It’s a shooter for me that’ll get passed down eventually so no worry.

That one is in spectacular condition. Good buy. Grips/stocks are neither here nor there. A N frame .357 is a wonderful thing...

S 104600, 4” with original target stocks went for just over $1,000 on GB
One of the first ones, I wanted it bad but just couldn’t do it at this time.

Probably late 1954. First year Mod 28 I believe. i guess I would pay more for an early one, but i do not pay near that for mine. I think they are one of the last good bargains out there, but they are creeping up

I bet you could have ordered one, but I have never seen anything but magnas. I bought my first one in 68 for 101.00. A 6". I know as an LEO back then I could have taken it to Smith, and had 3 T's done for next to nothing. That would be a prize. They pretty much did what LEO's wanted for peanuts back then. It was just a drive ( 90) miles to the factory back then. I had lots of mods made, and actions tuned. Colts too

I think my S 127xxx is late 54, S104600 put it at the front of the line. I thought I read the HP started at S 104500?
Mine is a 6”, the fit and finish, the lock work is outstanding. I really want a 4” some day.

My S181*** 4 inch is from late 1958. Has numbered Magna grips. My Dad was HP. He carried a Model 10 that was issued.

I bought my first S&W center fire revolver in 1973 at Mashburn Arms in OKC. I wanted a used 5” model 27 they had on consignment but couldn’t come up with the $325. Instead, I paid $160 for a new 6” model 28. Went back a couple of days later with more money and got the 27. Still have both guns.

I have a 4 inch blue 99% its definitely a keeper . Very Accurate and shoots and handles very well , using it with a speedloader too

As i said, I got my first one in 68. $101.00. Not sure why I got rid of it. I think it went towards my 1971 Browning Hi-power, that i still have. Also not sure why it took me 45+ years to get another. I don't own a 27, never have, and probably never will as long as there are nice 28's to be had. I have plenty of shiny guns

Not sure what number they started at, but as I said i think it was 54 for the first year. If you want a nice one, my suggestion is to place an ad in the WTB section of this forum, and of course the WTS section. All 3 of mine came from this forum. Actually, in the last 6 months. I have bought maybe 15 revolvers, and they were all off of this forum using both WTB and WTS sections. Met some nice people along the way. Actually I was not looking for this last one, but it looks unfired, or if it has been, maybe a dozen rounds, so it is a fine example, and worth having
