Default N-Frame in 3 1/2" Barrel???

Last weekend at a local gun show I was doing some swapping and ended up with this presentation box. It appears to be one from the 1974 - 1978 era. A 3" revolver fits with some room left over, and a 4" is just a little too big. Looking at the back of the insert, it doesn't look as if it has been modified in any way. So I guess it is for a 3 1/2" revolver. I am wondering if S&W made such things in that time period?

Smith & Wesson made thousands of Model 27-2s with 3 1/2" barrels.

LEO918 nailed it. That box was most probably for a 3 1/2" barreled model 27-2 from the mod to late 70's.

Now you'll have to find a 3 1/2" 27-2 to fill it. It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it.

The presentation cases for the Model 27 with 3-1/2" barrel are very much sought after as they were only offered for a few years as standard equipment. If you put it on eBay you should get at least $250 for it, IMO.

Probably more since it is in such nice original condition. I would guess $300+. They don't come up for sale often, especially in that condition.

Now that would look sweet with magnas. I love that 'window' between the cylinder face and frame on 24s, 27s, and 28s.

I'm curious, were all the model 27 inserts for 3 & 1/2" barrels molded for target grips or were some made to fit magna grips as well?

I believe that all of the liners that were molded plastic or styrofoam were formed to fit target grips only.

As boykinlp mentioned, I paid well north of $250, hell north of $300 for my mint condition 3-1/2" case - AND, it's the only one I've come across. Believe it came from a member here on the for sale board actually. But I've been known to pay too much, I definitely DO NOT have the patience of Job.

One thing that I am curious about.....I saw a S&W presentation case for sale that was for a gun with 3 1/2 inch barrel recently. But, instead of having the molded places for the tools, it had the large opening with the removable top. I thought the only original case for this size gun came with the molded slots. Did they come from the factory both ways? Thanks.

I've never seen a presentation case for the 3-1/2" Model 27 that was NOT the version with the tools openly displayed in the lower left quadrant, and gun barrel pointed to the left.

I would posit that the case you saw for sale recently with the tools under the rectangular cover in the lower right quadrant was a box for a 4" gun that had been modified somehow to appear to have been made for the shorter 3-1/2" barrel.

Nice score Vp!
In that condition, that case will bring $300+ immediately
