Locked Presentation Box?
I ask because I find it a little hard to believe. Did 1979-era (toolbox with lid) M29 presentation boxes locked? Losing the key could mangle a good thing...

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN BY A (toolbox with lid)......
IF YOU ARE REFERRING TO A STANDARD PRESENTATION CASE, THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT THERE IS ONE UNIVERSAL KEY, THAT WILL OPEN ALL---RATHER THAN A KEY CUT FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL CASE.....

I've never seen a factory mahogany presentation case from the 1979 era that had a locking clasp. That would include all versions that preceded it as well.
I have seen factory presentation cases (with a glass top) that have locking mechanisms but they came much later.

The mahogany cases that came out in 1977 for the 125th Anniversary Issue had a lock on them. As far as I know, that was for the Model 25-3 only, but I could be wrong.

Oh, I forgot about that one. I was thinking about the versions that were so common (and standard for many) for the large N-frames in that era.
There are likely some other special editions or commemoratives that came with a locking box, too.

Oops. Not locking. just double clasp. I mistook the slot the buttons slide in for locks. My bad. Nothing to see here.
Thanks for the scare though! Paying too much for this thing. ; )

The 8 3/8” cases have double clasps, as they are longer.
The rest are single clasp.

Is this cold hard fact? My '79 4" 29-2 comes in a double-clasp box with insert and tools. Insert is in great condition. Gun is advertised as 100% by a restorer and purveyor of "high quality firearms."

I own and have owned several presentation cases for 4" N-frame revolvers and none of them had two clasps, always just one. Same with my cases for the 6" and 6-1/2" guns. But if all else looks right on your case, it could be original. I've just never seen one.

Only cases for guns with an 8 3/8-inch barrel have two clasps (1958-1985).

Here's what I'm seeing. Looks legit, but Doc44 is the man, so now I'm worried. As I said, paying too much for this gun (and would prefer not to get into THAT ; )
Let's say, for example, that this case once held a Colt Commander or something, but that doesn't explain the Smith insert, which appears to be original and in excellent shape. I've seen more than a few of this age turning to blue dust. Anyway, thanks for any (more) ideas about what this might be,

And let me ask this if I may: did any of the two-latch cases have this sliding latch type, or were they the more typical type whose nomenclature I dont know?

Mahogany cases with one or two latches had three types of latch. One was made by SMS in England (generally not seen after 1966) and Presto Lock Co;, Garfield, NJ (used from 1960 through 1985 when the case was discontinued). The latch used on the earliest mahogany cases was also used on the dark blue to black cases beginning in late 1956, but only for a short time. The manufacturer is unknown.
I have never seen a case like the one you posted in #12.
The case shown below dates to 1980 and has the original lining.

I have one of the newer glass top ones, and it does lock, with a single latch in the center. My older ones have no lock, and 2 latches at either end.

Gun is advertised as 100% by a restorer and purveyor of "high quality firearms."
This sentence is subject to some interpretation.
100% factory original, untouched?
Components in perfect shape?
Restored to 100%?
Etc.

The interior of the presentation case shown in post #12 has been "restored". Compare it to the original lining shown in post #14. The original material (a synthetic of some type) used to cover the inserts deteriorated rapidly, and nearly every case I have seen needs restoration. The case shown in #14 has never had a revolver placed in it, and if it did, the lining would quickly deteriorate.
