Default Poor Timing at Local Gun Show

Ever have poor timing at a show? Today I walked 20 feet in the door and sold an AR. I took the buyer to pick up the box and accessories. On the way back in, pretty much in the same spot, I saw a 2 1/2 inch 686-1. It had just been sold. I talked with the seller later and he let it go for $ 550.

I had a 4 inch 686-1, a model 65 three inch and a USP compact 45 stainless for sale. A few people showed interest in the revolvers but no takers. A couple of minutes later one of the lookers showed me a model 68 6 inch LAPD marked gun he had picked up for $ 600.

I would have purchased both guns in a heartbeat. But I was just a few minutes late. I did end up selling my 686 and stuck around for a couple of hours. Nothing else piqued my interest while there. Has anyone else struck out so spectacularly in one day?

Not timing per se, but I have found desirable revolvers when I had no money or I had the money and didn't know enough about what was for sale.

I was at a gun show & a guy walked by with what he called a "1917". I looked at it, as did another guy. The seller had a .455 Triple Lock that had been altered for .45 ACP/.45 Auto Rim. The price was $135. I had the money in my pocket, but the rent was due.

A few years later, I was looking at a revolver that didn't have the cylinder release and nut. The seller wanted $135, but I passed because of the missing parts.

What was the revolver in question? A 1950 Military in .45 ACP/.45 Auto Rim, which was an updated 1917 with the short action. S&W only built about 3976 of those rare bad boys.

If anyone at a gun show ever offers me a firearm for $135 again, I'm going to buy, regardless of what it is.

Muley Gil, I have a Sears single shot 20 gauge that I'll ship to you for the 135$. You said you would buy any firearm offered you for 135$. I don't think you'll jump on this one. At some time in any gun persons life, they have had bad timing when it comes to gun deals.

Yep, it's happened to me.

There's a Gun shop I frequent that's real close to a Pawn shop that also sells gun. I decided to go to the Gun shop first right when it opened and look around. A 1/2 hour later I was at the Pawn shop. As I walked in, someone was purchasing a late 40's M&P I would have bought.

If only I had stopped at the Pawn shop first.

I have about 20 revolvers all with 4" barrels or less. I am not crazy about 6" revolvers, but this gun for some reason really spoke to me. I did put a WTB ad on the forum for a model 68. Don't really care whether an LAPD or CHP.

I worked for a small PD (50 full time officers) for many years. One of my friends worked for Dayton PD. My police chief bought 4-6" model 66's directly from S&W. I sold my brother one (since stolen) and I kept one. I later sold it to my friend. He was shot and killed on duty about 20 years ago. I recently found out his family sold it to a person working at the local crime lab (MVRCL). That may be why I loved this 68.

I set up a table at several shows around the state. While everyone is setting up we also travel around to all the tables to see what's available.

One of the common phrases is "I'll have to sell something in order to afford 'that'." The phrase has become so cliché and annoying I try not to speak it. I did think it to myself in May '17 when I watched a guy put out an uber nice postwar M&P snubbie for $500 during the Friday setup.

I sold several guns right off the bat on Saturday morning and let the money burn a hole in my pocket. I ran back over to the other building to buy the M&P. The seller told me he'd had six other vendors interested in it, and the first guy there with the cash got the gun that morning. C'est la vie!

About two months ago I stopped by a small local gun shop, me and the owner are on good terms. If I see something I want I just tell him to hold it for me, as long as I come in with cash in a few days .

The owner was busy on the phone, and they were getting ready to close for the day, they were moving the guns to the vault etc.

I spotted a nice Model 18-2 with a price of 550 on it. I didn't want to bother the owner who has always treated me right so I didn't interrupt him or slow down their shutting the place up for the night,

They open at 9:30, I was there with cash in hand at 10:00, it sold at 9:45.
Good manners cost me that one !!!

I'll sound like a jerk here but hell, at least I'm honest. Saw a guy selling a 945 and another guy looking to buy it. As it was not my deal, I sat idly by to be the NEXT guy if the buyer passed, and I kept my mouth sealed. What I found was that the guy selling it knew squat about it and the prospective buyer knew less.

The kind of story where a seller is trying to describe what it is, the history behind it, etc etc and it sure seemed like he was making it up as he went along. And both parties were dinging in to this and that as they handled it.

It made me sad when they made the deal. The 945 wanted to be fully appreciated... (I heard it call out to me! )

Yup, been in the same boat. Either didn't have the money and found what I was looking for, or vice versa . Just a week ago I was at a very small local show, and brought along a gun I've been looking to sell for awhile now, with no luck. Low and behold a seller came up to me and bought it for my asking price not long after getting in the door. Not 10 minutes later , I found a seller who had a very nice S/W 38/44 heavy duty { 1951 } for just what I had with me and selling my gun I brought. Needless to say, just plain old dumb luck , LOL !!

Happened to me with a s&w 624... saw it at a show, went home and got a few guns out to sell, walked around until I sold them all...then came back to the table with the 624 only to see a guy filling out the paperwork on that 624.
I wouldn't have sold the guns I brought if I knew I was going to miss out on the 624.

in 1994 I was at a gun show in Kalamazoo Michigan. Saw a Model 29-2 4" LNIB complete with the wood presentation box. I want to say it was $550.00. Making my loop through the show, I passed by another table full of S&W revolvers. Dealer there asked me if I'd seen anything interesting in the show, not thinking a guy selling guns would want to buy, I said yeah, a 29-2 4", I think I'll head back that way and pick it up. Anyhow, I made it through the next row of tables, then went back to the table at the beginning of the show where the 29-2 was. There was the other dealer, walking past me with a smug look on his face, with the 29-2 under his arm. Moral of the story is strike when the irons hot. I've taken guns to pedal at shows, and have had dealers pull out 10 year old blue books to quote prices from. Knowledge is everything.

Good manners didn't cost you anything. You should have been there before they opened . The other guy understood being late gains you nothing.

I was going to the same gun show twice. Once on Saturday and again on Sunday. The sellers put out more guns on the second day. Look good and move fast.

Usually, i walk through any show several times, especially if I'm on a mission to find a particular gun. Always seem to miss something, the first go round or two. Often times I've hit the jackpot at smaller shows as opposed to bigger ones.

In my opinion... selling guns to fund another is typically a losing proposition. And actually knowing or admitting that you wouldn't have sold them had you known that you'd miss your target gun...?

You don't see the flaw in that logic?

Over the years I have accumulated guns that have sat in my safe and been either collecting dust, or very seldom shot. I have come to the point in my life { retired & 67 years old } that if I can't enjoy a gun, why not sell it for one I can. For awhile, now I have been leaning more toward S/W revolvers, for one reason due to the fact I've had shoulder surgery, and shooting big bore rifles is probably history for me. I reload for several calibers, so that helps soften the blow financially with ammo. All in all, if I am searching for a particular gun, and I have something that is expendable , well, I try my very best to make it work for me .

He wouldn't take a deposit and i wouldnt put money down since full payment was dependant on selling guns that i wasnt sure i could sell...and I wanted that 624. I consoled myself with a 625-2 instead, but I wanted that 624 more. I have a thing for .44 specials.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Well, I can sympathize a bit as I have been hearing the siren call for a 624 myself. I'd like a 6-1/2" barrel. All of the shorter ones simply don't interest me. Puts me in a good spot perhaps, as it seems like the shorter 624's go for more money.

We have all been on both sides of these sort of deals, win some lose some...

None of You Guys are alone. I have set up at gun shows since '75' and only twice have people looked hard at a gun and walked away only to turn around after a few feet and come back and buy the gun. Both said that if They didn't buy it now it wouldn't be here when They come back. Can't begin to count the ones who came back and were upset the gun was gone.

I have missed out but I have probably also gotten lucky the same number of times. I passed on a 60-10 one time at a local show, then at the next show it was back and already sold by the time I spotted it. The guy took $100 less than he wanted originally. That was a few years ago and I haven't seen a 60-10 in person since.

On the other hand I happened upon a 5" 629-3 Classic in an LGS completely by chance. This store posts it's used inventory online so it wouldn't have made it day.

The worst thing you can do is walk away from a gun to "think about it"

The deals that make me maddest are the ones I passed up on the internet, like when I see a gun that I've wanted for a long time and is hard to find with a very reasonable "buy it now" price. The auction is almost up and there are some very low bids and I will get greedy and submit a higher bid instead of clicking the "buy it now" button and then I will watch the auction like a hawk and it looks like I will get the gun but then someone clicks the "buy it now" option and gets it. I'll want to kick myself because had I won the auction I would have only saved a small amount of money over the "buy it now price".

I'm sure that has happened to MANY guys. If they don't learn from it after the first time it happens to them, then they deserve to keep missing out.

Timing. I had been looking for a shooter 32-20 to convert into a adjustable sight 32 S&W. Had the sights and a spare K22 cylinder. Just needed a frame and a 32 cal barrel for a switch cylinder 32/32-20. Find one at a pawn shop, but price is kind of high, but a 1/3 off sale is starting the next morning. He will not make a deal or drop price before hand. I show up the next morning right before opening. Couple guys already waiting. One of them makes a beeline to the gun counter and snaps up the 32-20. Such is life. Probably 5 minutes of time. I later picked up a 32-20, but not for as good of deal. But, hey, I could have bought lots of guns years ago for less money and did not. Just how life goes.

Just yesterday I hesitated for about 5 minutes and missed out on a nice 3" 65-2 the guy was selling for $475. Should've just told him "I'll take it" instead. Those don't come around that often, specially at that price.

I paid that for a 3" M65 back in May. Considering what S&Ws are going for these days, I thought that was a fair price.

The best part is that I had given my wife my nickel 4" M19-4 a number of years ago. Since she prefers stainless, we swapped.
