Default 25-2 throat questions

Still trying to talk myself into a 25-2, instead of a 27-2.....want one 6 or 6& 1/2 N frame to go with my 28 4"..question is, are all 25-2 large throat cyls? can I get by with handloading jacketed .45 and get accuracy? or is factory ammo the answer? is the blue on the 25 as good as a 27-2?. Guess I got several questions in one post!.....Man, a beautiful 27-2 is a sight to behold ........

Only have one 25-2 but that has .452 throats (or close to it, a .452 bullet won't fall through). I usually shoot cast or coated in this and my 625s and accuracy seems fine; better than I can hold for sure. Finish is nice but generally not up to 27-2s of the same period in my opinion. Where I shop they're much harder to find than 27-2s and I haven't seen one under $800 in a long time. Good luck.

I recently bought one at a gun show. Checked the throats with the expedient of dropping a .452 ACP bullet in the cylinder bores. In five of them it fell and stopped at exactly the same depth and one very slightly deeper in. Didn't come close to falling thru. Closest thing to a plug gauge I had handy but it worked. Also shoots better than I can hold. Congrats, you got a very nice weapon.

The other stuff you will find out with some trial and error. Mostly I have shot lead RN-FP bullets thru it at reasonable velocities. It is DIFFERENT than the 27, but not better or worse.

454 diameter cast bullets are available from some casters if you need them

I've posted on this topic before. I'm not saying there's nothing to all this oversize throat business, but IN MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE it didn't matter. I bought a pre 25-2 in about 1991 or so. I shot it with .452 cast bullets because that's what I shot in my two 1911s. And accuracy was phenomenal. Like one ragged hole at 50 feet, not much bigger at 25 yards.

I didn't obtain a set of pin gauges until about 10 years ago , and this gun has throats in the .454-.455 range. Guess the gun didn't know any better!

If Photobucket hadn't gotten weird I could show target pictures. One of these days I'll get around to trying a different hosting site.

Here's a 25-5 if that helps, although the picture might be totally useless for your purposes:

There are an awful lot of people who spend their time obsessing about this. Good to hear that someone just went out and starting shooting his pre-25 without all the hand wringing!

I have had a couple 25-2's and they (I still have one) have been great guns. Mine all have the cylinder bores chamfered for smooth use of moon clips-wouldn't have it any other way. I softer lead bullet will fill whatever space is needed YMMV.
