Default Tapping a revolver

Ok how much does it devalue a revolver when you tap a hole in the top for a red dot, not on anything that is really rare but just shooters?

Or does anybody have another way to mount a red dot for a blind old man?

Thanks,
Kirk

I've had quite a few guns drilled and tapped. Always with the standard S&W pattern under the rear sight. Unless you are dealing will a real collector grade gun it shouldn't make much difference. If it's shooter grade then it's the buyers perogative to buy or walk away and look for a non drilled gun.

That is the best way to mount a scope, especially if the holes are done in the same pattern as the newer factory ones. This gives you many off the shelf options of mounts.

It makes it more valuable to you, first, and more valuable to anyone who comes after, as well.

Aim Tech No drill Scope mounts not only allow mounting a scope or red dot but also allow you to keep the iron sights in place.
Been using them since 2000 on a S&W model 64 and a model 58 with excellent results. Both of these revolvers have fixed sights and I didn't want to drill holes in the frame but I was having trouble seeing the irons . Aimtech had some no drill and no tap , perfect .
Check them out by searching aimtech-mounts . Cost is very reasonable too . The mounts have allowed my old eyes to get some optical help and I can shoot again. If you want it removed it's an easy off .

Tough to put a price devaluation on extra holes in a gun. It's not just the holes that devalue the gun, but also how many and how they're done. Also what the gun is, nd it's inherent value too. Really no way to put an exact figure on how much each hole hurts it.

I don't know how much it detracts from the collector value. I like drilled and tapped guns because, as a shooter and not a collector, I get better deals. Both my 5 screw pre 25-2 and my 4 screw pre 29 were drilled and tapped. Not bubba jobs by any means, but made the guns affordable!

Yes, but you need the 3 holes in the frame for that, right? The older ones don't have that.

I bought a mount for a vortex venom from EGW and it requires only one hole to be tapped in the older smith frames.

YES, THERE ARE NO DRILL. NO TAP, CLAMP ON SIGHT MOUNTS AVAILABLE......

SEARCH EBAY, GUNBROKER, AND POST A WTB AD ON THIS FORUM......

I HAVE 2 THAT MOUNT 30MM ULTRA DOTS, ON 2 NO-DASH 8 3/8" REVOLVERS THAT I WISHED TO PRESERVE IN THEIR UNMOLESTED CONDITION. THE ARE BOTH K/L FRAME STAINLESS STEEL REVOLVERS THAT THE MOUNTS AND ULTRA DOTS BLEND WITH HARMONIOUSLY........

B-SQUARE IS THE MANUFACTURER OF ONE OF THEM, AND I BELIEVE THE OTHER ONE IS A LYMAN PRODUCT. BOTH WERE PURCHASED USED......

Blind and old ?
Mount the sight however you prefer and have fun shooting....
Let the pesky heirs worry about devaluation.
Go shooting , have fun while you can !

I have a m19 6" that I bought with scope on it. No drill job, I
got a good deal on it and wasn't interested in the scope. The
back site wasn't with it but I had a few extra so that didn't bother
me. Took scope and mounts off to deal them off. The no drill mount had rubbed the blue off frame where it clamps on. The gun is a good shooter so I still have it. I would have much rather
had a gun that was D&T. After this gun I am leery of any no drill
mounts on revolvers. If I sold gun it would be docked for the
defects in blue. Gun is otherwise 90%. D&T wouldn't affect value.
Back sight would cover holes.
