The change in the frame design to accommodate the frame mounted firing pin occurred in approx 1998 for most models.

I believe it was in the mid 50's. Primarily in magnum calibers, but I have also seen them in other "non-magnum" caliber hammers. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason, or regular, consistent fitment of them. Some of the magnum revolver hammers have them and some don't.
I'm not absolutely sure about the reason for them either, other than reducing stress on the hammer, frame and primer. Perhaps someone will chime in soon that actually knows what they are talking about.

With the non spring loaded ones, sometimes the pin would be in the UP position when it came to the frame, catch and break. The spring holds it in the DOWN position until it enters the hammer nose bushing, where it then pivots up to go through the hole. Some frames have a factory cut notch at the top to deflect the hammer nose back down, or maybe it's clearance.

They are not spring loaded on my K-frames, but they are on my N-frames.

Oh you guys! I've never paid much attention to this. Yes, I've noticed the spring on some revolvers, but I sure can't tell you which ones. So NOW I need to go fish out all my S&Ws and have a look.
