Default Added a K38 Combat Masterpiece.

Picked up a pretty nice k38 this week on GB. From what I can see it shows very little wear, I haven't received it yet but it should come in sometime this coming week. from the Ser# I think it's a first year production, at 445 bucks I think I'll be happy.

Really nice K38; Congrats. Your SN would put the gun at 1949, the first year production of the Combat Masterpiece.

Very nice early K38 Combat Masterpiece !
I would call that one "Pre production" and agree likely a 1949 shipped gun.

While S&W made a couple of special order batches of Combat Masterpiece revolvers in .22lr, .32 and .38 Special to test market interest in 1948-49 the four inch "Combat" Masterpiece didnt appear as a regular cataloged item until the 1950 AMC.

Early Combat Masterpiece revolvers normally have a "Satin" finish.
Please post some pics when you get it in hand and more importantly if it has a Satin or "Bright" blue finish.

IMO this one deserves a letter to see where it went originally.

An interesting early Combat Masterpiece feature is the flat top on the front site blade,..... K22 Combats are even flatter.

Hello andy, at $445, you got some CM collectors screaming in their pillows. Darn good snag.

Very nice!!! Actually I am Jealous. Always looking for my birth year. I have a 6" 1950. As close as I have gotten so far, but it cost more than your bargain price. Nice find!

Mine is the top one in the pic. The other's are early 15-3's

An exceptionally good buy, andy52.

I agree with the 1949 date of assembly. It could have shipped after the first of the year, no telling without a letter. I would letter that one if it were in my collection.

From picture #2 it appears to have the satin blue finish. Look at the left side of the frame, where the flash isn't being reflected.

P.S. the case colors on the hammer are striking!

Most of the CM I have seen have had magnas, but the box that this one came with was marked for the Target Trigger, Target Hammer, and Target Stocks. (Box marked TT TH OSS).

Best Regards, Les

One of the things I like about the post WW2 and into the early 1960s is the color case on the hammers and triggers. It just jumps out at you. Later guns seem to be much more subdued. Andy52s gun is a great example of color case that just screams: Look at Me!

Not sure what came on mine as I do not have a box for it. It came with some aftermarket magnas, and I found an "OK" set of factory magnas for it, but they don't fit my hand well. Besides I like the look with the Targets.

I probably will letter it, I've got a 1950 target that I've been wanting to letter I'll sent them both in at the same time.

a couple of months ago I sold a 1949 K38 target to a member here. He had put a WTB for a birth year gun and I just happened to have one, really wasn't trying to sell it but what the heck everyone should have at least one birth year. I have 3 birth year revolvers and one is even year and month.

I don't have birth year yet, but 4 HS graduation pieces.

I saw the thread you mentioned

Sweet looking gun and a great find.

I acquired a K-38 with target stocks in the early 70s. Used but not abused it was made in 1966 (my year of HS Graduation) and was my second gun. I still have and treasure it.

Nice score Andy52, and a very good price these days. Here is another one from 1956. Les.B, there can't have been many K38 Combat Masterpieces shipped with the 3T's. Someone, probably the original owner must have ordered one that way. I would think that the majority of them shipped with standard service hammer/trigger/Manga stocks. I sure wish I had a matching 5 screw K22 Combat Masterpiece.

Perhaps not. I don't think anyone knows for certain how many left the factory with all three Ts.

But this one did (Model 15-2 from 1966):

I hope so!

Model 15/Combat Masterpiece is probably my favorite S&W.
I remarked to someone earlier this week, I think on one of the
Facebook groups, that I believe the Combat Masterpiece is usually the
most reasonably priced of all the postwar vintage Smiths. This bears that out, I think.

Congratulations on a great deal on a great revolver!

You were correct, I posted a ship date in the SWCA area and Roy confirmed it shipped April 1950.
