Red ramp fell out,has this happened to you
I have a mod28-2 ,4" that I use as
Use as a knock about it gets carried
In a holster and shot with full
Power loads stool take care of
It just do not baby it.
I have 3 mod 28's this is only
One with red ramp I have read that
All 28's had the ramp without
Inserts. I don't know or care
If is factory . Is there a easy fix if not
I will fit a steel or polished brass
Insert.I will consider any suggestions
And let you know what I decide
to do.

Dave, believe that either Brownwll's or Midway offers kits to fix you front sight. Good luck.

RED RAMPS
I suspect if not factory, and I have never seen one that was,it was not done correctly. That being undercut, and two small holes drilled to be filled with the ramp material. Brownells kits are a. expensive, b. hard to come by. I sold one I had but never used to a forum member in need. I still have a vial of powder, but no liquid . I have done hundereds of these back in the day, but not in a long time. There are a few other choices available to you such as plastic from an old toothbrush of your choice. Hoppes offered a 'orange' cleaning brush at one time. Brass glued in would be another choice, but be sure and rough up the bottom of the insert and the bottom of the cut as well. I never found the'red' color to be much help in the sun as it fades out. Yellow has worked well for me as well. Fiber optic green was installed on my 500-- works great, but I fear not an opition for you. Gold beads work well also. If you are handy, you might be able alter one to fit, but be careful on your height. Just a few ideas.
PS. also you can groove the top of the insert with a checkering file.

I have used red shotgun cases in the past, worked ok. Easy to cut put some glue on and trim with a knife.

I have done several using the method described at this link. Very nice. I like a yellow insert for day or low light situations.

Thank for input everyone
The sight dove tail cut does have
Two small holes in bottom flat
Holes still full of red plastic
Have had to people reach out to say
They think there were some made
For police dept. in N.Y
Am not worried about collectors
Value on this gun
Found kit in Brownells
Think I will experiment with some
Melted plastic first
Thanks Dave.357

Make a new one from a tooth brush handle, your color of choice and glue in place. Trim to fit. Very easy to do. Thats what my 4" 28 wears. It has never moved.

New York State Police had M28s with the red ramp and a smooth .312" trigger.
I have also installed many a sight insert using a piece of a tooth brush handle. White, red, orange and green were all popular at one time.

My 28 does have a wide smooth
Trigger and red ramp so maybe
It is NY gun.
I found the insert that fell out
In bottom of holster like I
Said the 2 pegs that go in
Holes sheared off still in sight
I used super glue gel and put
It back in so it is fixed for now.
If it fails again I have decided
To make a brass one.
Thanks for the help

I've done several with the kit from Brownells. Very easy and turned out real nice. The kit I got at a gun show has 3-4 different color dyes. I've only used the red and green. Redid the green one. I didn't like it very much

Quality epoxy with epoxy dye or even a tiny bit of enamel paint mixed in works well. Use some plastic cut from a coffee can cover to form sides and tilt gun so ramp is level. Fill with colored epoxy, trim with razor blade. Oh, remove old plastic from holes with hot pin or needle

Back in the 80's I purchased Lee's Red Ramp filler kits, and they worked fantastic. I did quite a few for customers on guns that didn't come with a red ramp. Sadly Lee's is gone, and the only way now is to use a piece of colored plastic and epoxy it in. Be sure to tape up the gun's sight and barrel first to eliminate any epoxy getting into the wrong place, and use clear 5 minute epoxy.

I have made several out of my mother-in-law's key to my house. Melted it down and formed several brass ramp inserts from it. Getting them in place isn't hard and keeping them there is as easy as leaving them alone.

Back when S&W only offered the RR on their premium models I used to do a brisk business adding them to revolvers that did not come with them.
I used a clear two-part epoxy and just added a dab of nail polish of the desired color; worked perfectly.
I once saw a Python I had done this to for sale at a show in Jacksonville and had a good laugh when the seller claimed it was a factory special order. Guess I should have been flattered that my work was good enough for him to think that would fly.

A friend of mine made a insert for his 29 out of an old ivory knife handle, that was very classy. I would do the same if faced with replacing a missing ramp insert.
