Default Are 2 1/2 M66 Combat Magnums going for this much?

Just browsing the net I see them going for more than $1000!! Is this true?

I say that because I guy I know wants to trade his 2 1/2 66 (no dash) .357 for my Colt Combat Commander, series 80. Now I am a real fan of the snub .357 66, but past $1000???

Yes, some of the P&R guns are going for over a grand. I have an early no-dash 66 snub and I wouldn't sell it for $1500.

You can find later versions for a bit less. A 66-3 just sold here yesterday for over $800, no box , no papers, just a nice gun.

I have a "dash 1" and $1000 won't touch it. It was fired very little and I have original grips and box.

Well folks I have 4 of 'em. -1, -1 1/2 (long story there), -2, and a -3. So... I am trading for a no-dash 66. All of mine are 2 1/2 snubs.

Thanks.

I have a like-new -4 that I wouldn't sell for $800 - they are appreciating too fast not to hold out a while longer if, of course, I was in a mood to sell. How fast are they appreciating, you ask? Five years ago, I paid $416 for it.

I sold the two that I had to two police officers back in Virginia last year for $950 each -- that's with the LEO discount.

These are highly prized for whatever reason. Interestingly enough, I have found Model 19-4s in the same configuration and condition, for $200 less. Go figure.

One reason is that it is one of the best carry pieces Smith ever built. Great balance between size and power.
I have a -1 snub that the metal is in pretty good condition and the stocks are beat up. Would not sell it for $1,000.00. By the time I found a replacement, with the rate of price increase it would cost me $1,300 - $1,500.00 I aint the only who is thinking that so supply is drying up fast.

Talking Home again

I carried this one as a Deputy US Marshal in the 1970s. it's pinned and recessed. Due to a family emergency, I sold it to a Kentucky LEO.

A little bit back, I was looking thru Gunbroker and it was for auction thru a Kentucky dealer. I recognized it by a piece of checkering that was broken off in a scuffle with a wanted felon and the old scratched up Tyler Tgrip. I paid way too much (over $1150) in a bid war to get it back but it is the right one. The serial number matches what is on my old qualification records. With that kind of luck, I should have gone to Vegas that week. I'll post a picture of the other side of the 66 showing the chipped grip when I get one taken.

here's the photo with the chipped grip.

Honestly, I would not pay a grand for a 2 1/2" 66. That being said, I wouldn't sell either of these for less than that because of sentimental value.
The 66-2 on top is my first S&W revolver. The 66-1 is 1 of 5 that were issued to the local Sheriff's Office in March of 1980.

The only thing better than a 2 1/2 inch 66 for a concealed carry revolver ..

is a 3 inch 66!!

Why S&W only made 5500 of the 3 inch guns is a mystery to me

jughed did you make those wood grips????????? Back in the 80s I made a couple of sets of "Boot grips" from Banana/Target grips....... before I discovered Craig Spegel's Boot Grips.

Those are Ahrends conversion grips that I shortened and reshaped. I don't care for those sharp edges on the Ahrends. Sanded those down as well. Done a few sets like that.

When I first got back into the shooting sports my first purchase was a 66 no dash 2 1/2 in. for $420. Didn't realize what a gem I had until joining this forum.
The only gun I shoot better is its big brother a 4" 66 no dash.
None of them would be for sale.
My son had never owned a revolver until he shot the 66s. He now has his own 4".

I believe I paid a fair price for this one, however, the shipping (direct to my door) seemed a bit much.

2.5” 66/19s are definitely hot items, especially the P&R variants. About 6 years ago I picked up this 66-1 for $750. I walked into a gun shop in NorCal, looked around but didn’t see what I wanted. As I was leaving, the owner asked me what I was looking for. Told him I was searching for a 2.5” 66. He lifted his shirt, pulled a holstered 66-1 and said, “like this one? It’s yours for $750.” After a brief inspection I lifted my shirt and quickly pulled my holstered cash. No box or goodies, but I wouldn’t sell it for less than $1100.
Out west P&R 2.5” 66s are bringing $850 to $1500, where dash 2s and later are bringing $650 to $1000. P&R 2.5” 19s are bringing similar, but slightly higher prices.

It’s hard for me to walk away from a fairly priced 2.5” 66/19.

However, like Easter eggs, there are still great deals waiting to be found. I recently picked up another 19-4 at a local pawn shop for $568 + tax. In the past 2 years I’ve picked up several 66-2s for $500 to $650.

I've got mine and I'm happy - it would take a huge amount to part with these jewels!

Seven years ago I had the opportunity to purchase the 19-3 with 6" barrel from a co-worker for $400 with original box and target grips (which are now on the 4" 19). Once I had it I concluded I would need to get both the 2.5" and 4" to round out my collection. The 2.5" is a 19-4 and I paid $675 back in 2014. The same shop currently has another 19-4 snubbie for sale with a sticker price of $950. Glad I bought mine when I did. At the time $675 seemed pretty steep, but now not so much.

I wouldn't part with mine for $1000. But then I carried this one during myy time as Detective and it saved my bacon more than a couple of times. Mine is a-1.

Grips are no longer available Coco Bolo from Eagle, replacement for factory stocks that were rode hard during my duty years.

While I understand the round butt concealability argument, round butts just don't fit my hand right. I need a square butt. So, I bought this 2-1/2" Model 19-4 with a square butt from another member. Yeah, I know, at first I thought I had a real unicorn, but little research by Roy demonstrated that it had the original 4" barrel replaced after it left the factory.

I added the MOPs because they are cool, and anyway, I've always thought Patton was wrong on that score. Life is too short to pack ugly guns.

Real unicorn or no... add a Tyler T grip adapter and it's good to go!

I posted a thread maybe a year ago now highlighting how the mass produced S&W revolvers are NOT appreciating; they have simply kept up with inflation. It would behoove you to read it.

Your revolver did not double in value over a five year span. You simply bought a revolver for less than it was worth.

Okay, I'll agree with your second statement but let's play devil's advocate for a moment - have other brands of revolvers "kept up with inflation" as well as Colt and Smith & Wesson? Regardless of how you want to spin it, older S&Ws, especially shorter-barreled examples in nice condition, ARE selling for more money than they might actually be worth. Of course, what they are actually worth is subject to each person's opinion.

They are only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That being said, I will hang onto mine.

The S&W of days past is gone. Whether they are still a company cranking out new guns doesn't matter, all the ones they made are all there will ever be.

Everything is going for that much. People are paying it and looking all over to feed their guns. We may be living the old Chinese curse " May you live in interesting times."
