Smile New truck gun

Ok, so I'm recently hooked on Model 36's. Bought three in a month. Bought a nice one, then a good one, and now this beater.

I enjoy cleaning them up and have no issue pulling the side plate off to do a little work in there.

This one was rusty, so soaked it in RemOil and let it sit a bit. Filled my 0000 Very Fine steal wool with the thicker RemOil Pro and gave her a nice scrub. Worked out nice, even behind the grips where it was a bit worse.

Scrubbed the grips with a toothbrush and Dawn. That Dawn really pulls a lot of gook out of that wood. They had no finish left on them. After a good drying they got a coat of boiled linseed oil.

Gently got the side plate off and it was messy in there. Removed the rebound slide and smoothed the bottom and back side. Cleaned out the dirty spring channel and put in a 14# Wilson Combat trigger rebound spring.

Hosed the insides down with Gun Scrubber and let it dry. Hosed it down again with RemOil and gently blew it out a bit with compressed air.

Started looking good. Put a little TW25 on the bottom/back of the rebound slide, and installed with new spring.
Just a little TW25 in the side plate holes where the trigger/hammer pivots and back on with the side plate.

Now sprayed the freshened up 36 with some Barricade and wiped her down. Back on with the freshened up grips.

Still not the prettiest gun but I'm real happy. Paid $279 for her and makes a nice gun that you don't have to worry about scratches!

I'll let you guys be the judge!

EDIT: added pics with new grips

I sure love the Model 36. Mine is a sock drawer queen, but occasionally I'll carry it. When I need a j frame in my pocket my old Bodyguard Airweight seems to be my primary choice. The 36 lives OWB in a DeSantis thumbstrap.

Once I've satisfied a couple other wants maybe I'll add another 36 or two to the sock drawer

That Model 36 would be right at home in my truck (or SUV, or sports car) in the console or glove box. I can say this with authority because they frequently have either my Baby Chiefs Special or my snub 32 HE I-frame, both in similar cosmetic condition, along for the ride. Well done, it looks like a good’un to me!

Good looking model 36. Been carried a lot from the wear on the frame and right grip. Probably carried a lot and not shot very much. You got it for a real low price compared to down here.

The older I get the more I respect the Chiefs. Personally, I would not let that rattle around in a glove box. Maybe carried on your person while in your truck. I would like to hear the stories that 36 could tell

A five-shot snubbie for a car gun?

Mine's a Keltec Sub2K with two 33 round glock mags. 66 rounds of 9mm goodness as fast as I can look through the red-dot and squeeze 'em off.

And that's on top of my EDC gun on my person, M&P9 and an extra mag.

Yeah.

The J frame continues to be my go-to gun in retirement but I never leave a gun in my car. Too many are stolen that way and wind up in the wrong hands.

I agree. I guess I use it as a term like "tackle box gun". Just an old beater, but never just left in my F150.

OldCop, I live in louisiana and you see the various sheriff's departments repeatedly tell the residents not to leave guns, wallets, other valuables in their vehicles. This goes on week after week. They have videos taken by homeowners cameras depicting these nocturnal bandits opening vehicle doors (vehicles were unlocked) And stealing anything worth of value. This goes on and on. It amazes me that you can shell $5-800 for a handgun and casually leave it in an unlocked vehicle. One video in particular shows the theives inside someone's garage opening doors and taking valuables from their vehicles. I was taught that you never leave anything of value especially firearms. There’s also the highly respected but debated “Kit Gun” which initially meant part of one’s “kit” of stuff you needed to just be basically equipped. I also like the term “Every Day Carry” or “EDC” but again, you get the point across with “Truck Gun,” that piece of artillery you can take into a variety of situations where a gun might be needed, but that already has enough wear and tear that another scratch won’t hurt your feelings. Sort of the Polar Opposite of the legendary “Barbecue Gun.”

I have and appreciate several Chiefs and m.60's , but a Chiefs Special ain't no "artillery".
Heck , a bazooka isn't even artillery. Artillery would not fit in a truck.

Waveski, I was using the word “artillery” in an ironic and joking manner. You’ll get used to that from me after a while, but I have to say that application of the term isn’t unique with me though.

I got a Model 60 a couple years ago and pretty much use it the same way. At the time it was cheap, in good shape and I'm glad I got it. Haven't seen a decent one in a while now.

Truck has to be a late 1960s C10 with column shift and a bench seat.

I carried my 36 as my second gun until I upgraded to my 640. Used a pocket holster on the weak side.

As a retired LEO, I always wince when I hear the term "truck gun." Too many firearms are regularly stolen from parked vehicles. I hope folks do not leave their truck guns "unsupervised" when their owners are not in their vehicle...

Around here it's leaving the engine running and the kids in the backseat while running into the 7-11 to buy cigs or beer or pay for gas. Bandits have figured out to ditch the car, still running, once they realize they have company. Auto theft is one thing but they might actually have to serve a couple of months for kidnapping.

Agreed! More of a term than a practice for me at least.

Totally agree. I can remember many times taking reports of guns stolen out of trucks. Shotguns and Lever actions used to be come in truck window racks, then when you take the report, the owner has no idea what the serial number is. Often with a "truck gun" revolver the best they can do is tell you "well it's a 38". Good luck ever getting it back!!

Checking police reports in the newspaper often I don't recall see a car burgled in the last ten years. A lot depends on where you live but mine go in a locked garage with the emergency open rope missing a handle.

My truck gun is on my person at all times unless I am going in the Federal building or a courthouse, and then it gets checked in. Nothing is sacred or safe anymore from thieves. I avoid feeding them. As for a carry piece, I do like the J-frame without question. I am frequently found with a mod.49 or 649. I've got a Baby Chiefs, but it doesn't see duty any longer.

Besides being nice safe queens 36's make dandy shooters.
My "trunk gun" is a Taurus 605. Dang thing is bomb proof. But it definitely does not shoot as well as either my S&W 36 or my 638.

looking for a M36 now, here in Oregon they are going for $600 or more, hope to find a decent enough one for less than that.
As to truck handguns, console vault the way to go, would not own a truck without one.
