Stumbled onto one I'd never seen or heard of...
Out making a run on the 'trap line' from Pocatello to Idaho Falls yesterday, and an older Smith caught my eye out of a collection of NIB Smiths that an older collector's set that he was selling off.
It's an N-frame, fixed sight, .357, marked "Model 520". In the original box, with all the paperwork, cleaning set. At $1250, it's a bit out of my range, I'm one of the 'if I can't shoot it, I don't need it' guys.
So, New York ordered them, then reneged, and they hit the market for sale, is that right?
When I handled it, it felt a lot like my old 38-44 HD.
Strange critter to be sure.

I believe the 357 model 520 and the 41 caliber model 58 were the only two "modern" N frame 4" fixed sighted S&W revolvers. Having said that I expect a much more knowledgeable S&W person to come along and correct me

You are correct, the NYSP ordered 3,000 of them and then cancelled the order and as I recall, they purchased model 28's instead.
Most are found in the condition you described.

A buddy of mine picked one up a couple weeks ago minus the box etc. for $1000.00.
You don't see them for sale very often around here.

I confess this was a new one on me. The 4th edition shows two different model 520 revolvers. One is a N frame six shot produced in 1980 for the N Y State Police, but never delivered. Production run of 3,000. The only N frame 357 without target sights. The other one is a L Frame Model of 2005 with a seven shot fluted titanium cylinder.

Here's my 520. Its been fired 102 times.
The first round was a test round into the ground.
The original owner used the second round to take his own life.
My brother shot the next 100 rounds after he purchased it.
I've never fired it.
I had not idea that a NIB would be worth that kind of money.

Interesting gun. Did the 520s come with grooved or smooth-faced triggers?

Many years ago as a much younger man, I saw one of these at a gun show NIB. I believe the price was around $400-500. I remember looking at it with great interest, but decided to pass.
Ah, if I had known then what I know now.

There were a few fixed sighted .44 Magnums produced as well.

RE: fixed sight N-Frames … S&W has made some modern-modern ones in .45 ACP as well as .45 Colt and .44 Magnum if I recall correctly. "Thunder Ranch" or something like that. (You can look it up as well as I can!) Great concept. I may get serious about buying one of those some day.

The 520 is my favorite N-frame.
Glad N.Y. made such a wonderful "mistake."
By now the N.Y. troopers have slabsided
polymer dodoos in their holsters.

If it makes you feel better if you would have put that $350 in the bank and averaged 3.5% you would have $1,275 today, just enough money to buy a nice one

Quoting my brother from one of his posts here in the forum back in April 2012 how he acquired the 520 that I now have.
His was "used" when he bought it.
"I bought mine in 1981. Actually, I traded an as-new Model 39-2, which I had $85.00 in, for the -520. The -520 was for sale in a local shop for $250.00, but as a newly married home owner, I was cash-poor. While eyeballing the 520, another customer asked the dealer if he had a Model 39, which the dealer didn't. I followed the customer out of the shop, proposed a trade, and we met back near there the next day and swapped."

I had one when I was in law school; the dealer had a few and was selling them quickly as they thought it might have been a mistake to to ship it them. It was that soon after NYSP declined them.
I ended up selling it for tuition, a mistake of the first class. I would have been better off to dispose of my wife of the time; I paid a lot to correct that mistake. Admittedly, due to my eyes, I am not a fan of fixed sight revolvers and never have been.
The reason some of you comment on the similarity of the 520 to a .38-44 HD is because that is what it was, just done in .357. Remember that when the fixed sight HD got a model number it was the 20. The L frame "520" would have to improve a lot to be a pale imitation and an insult to the model number.

As an aside, I understand that the dealers who were "forced" to order the NYSP M-520's hard a hard time selling them at the time.

I believe the Model 28s for the NY state police came
with red ramp front sights as standard.
The 520 preceded the introduction of the highly
popular L-frame, the compromise between K and N,
which mimicked the Python.
As to the Model 520, it falls into the same large niche
as the 581/681/58: Intended for police but the market
just wasn't large enough for Smith to continue them.
On a forum such as this, we tend to fool ourselves that
the world is clamoring for our individual favorites. But
members such as here are few and far between compared
to the rest of the gun world.

Add to that the M520 / M581 / M681 came along at the time that LEO agencies across the nation were transitioning to high-cap bottom feeders.

Cost?? I would imagine that the 28s were less expensive than the 520s.

The Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson by Supica and Nahas indicate approx 500 units of the model 681 were shipped on June 18, 1982 with "NYSP" stamped below the window on the frame and were "M" stamped on the frame below the crane indicating a yoke (crane) modification.
The Standard Catalogue also indicates the model 520 was introduced in May 1980 with approx 3,000 units produced. Many here have reported that they remember them coming up for sale to the public around 1982 and that they were slow sellers at the time.
I'm not sure where the model 28s fit in.

Probably 1988 or so RSR had at least 100 of them. They ran a "special" for a couple months @ $189. Having an 01 FFL at the time I went up to get one. I'm a cash kind of guy, bought the customer ordered guns and the salesman had a 6" .22 mag Colt's Trooper MKIII in Coltguard for the same $189. What's that saying?: "So many guns, so little cash." The 520's eventually sold. Joe

Yes, but the 520 has an ejector shroud which the 58 doesn't.
I bought a real nice one, no box in December

The 520 is a very cool niche type gun. Really stands out. I need a Model 58 first though

The polishing/bluing on the 520 seems to be exceptional. Is this why they are typically seen in such high condition?

$1250? I would have torn my rotator cuff reaching for my cash!

Tincup, you lucky dog.
The bluing is nice unlike the M28 but I don't think the majority of them have been shot much or seen much holster time either.

Yes, that's what I mean. The blue is SO nice, no one wants to actually carry or shoot them much.
And, yes, my dog is very lucky to live in Tincup

Vast majority are encountered unfired in the box because everyone knew they were instant collectibles. Although 3,000 isn't exactly a small number. First one I ever saw was at the Columbus, OH show around 1994. New in box priced at $300. A fixed sight 357 didn't grab me.

Most are found in the condition you described.

The 520 is new to me, too.
What are the differences between it and the model 28?
