My 629 no dash
I bought this back in the early 80's. All I knew then is it was a genuine S&W .44 mag. Later on I read that S&W only made a limited run in the 8-3/8", which is what mine is. My question is that mine is not in the serial number range the Blue Book lists, by a mile. Mine is pinned and counter bored. My serial is N850XXX. Blue Book shows around N62XXXX. I know Smith doesn't ship in order but 200,000? Can anybody pin down a DOM?

Acorn, I have an 8 3/8"er serial number N838xxx. The best date I came up with for mine when I bought it (and with the help of the forum) was 81. The SCSW says the dates for N8xxxx was 80 - 83 and did mention very few were fitted with the 8 3/8" barrel.

Are the stocks original to your 629? Currently mine has cut out GA targets but through the years I’ve switched them around so.... I have a spare set of relieved walnut targets and may swap them out. I can’t remember what came on it.
I did a double take, I thought you stolen my gun!

Okay, you got my curiosity up so I went to the safe and pulled the grips. If I'm reading it right, it looks like 5 81 stamped on the left panel.

I bought mine new in '81 or '82. Serial # N841XXX. I think it was manufactured in 1981. The original blue lining dissolved along time ago.

Here is N869168. It came to me with smooth target grips on it. I liked them and left them. I think it shipped in 1982, but I could be mistaken...

Richard, I have a 6" P&R 629 with the smooth targets on it too. When I first purchased it and posted it on the forum it was of general opinion that the grips weren't original to the gun. You've given me hope! BTW, serial # N855xx.

The first or prototype Model 629s had serial numbers in the N629000 range. The first production revolvers started in 1980 at serial number N748564 with the first 4 and 8 3/8-inch revolvers starting at N778000. The Model 629, all barrel lengths, was made for approximately two years before being replaced by the Model 629-1 sometime in 1982.

P&R 629s
Just to add to Doc44's post, there are 629s out there that may be pinned, not recessed and vice versa. This is commonly the result of an engineering change. I have examples of 4, 6 and 8 3/8" barrel 629 no dash revolvers which are P&R. I have no idea how many were made.

FWIW, this four-inch no-dash P&R 629 left the factory in September, 1981. Serialed N8670xx. Gun was obtained LNIB, unfired except at S&W. It's one of my safe queens, and remains unfired.

Since it was mentioned about "parts clean up during transition," here is 629, no dash, #N87559x with recessed chambers and NO pin for reference.
I figure possibly late 1981 production?
Y'all take care, Bo

629s?
The unusual 629s are the ones with the pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, and an "N" serial prefix with the 4" and 8 3/8" barrels! The reason being is the dates of the practices of manufacturing.
1980 629s released to the public (6" guns)
1981 4" and 8 3/8" introduced
1982(approx) Changed to "ABC" serial numbering system and the 629-1
engineering change took place(dropped the P&R)
Here is some data from a factory letter from Mr. Jinks

629 No Dash
Mine, which is in excellent condition and in its presentation box, has 6 80 stamped on the left grip and the serial #is N777894 which coincides with the aforementioned information.
The barrel is pinned and the cylinder is recessed and is 6" long.
I used to carry one like it back in the '80's while hunting for Elk (and in Bear country) in a Jackass Rig. Unfortunately, that one was stolen from my home. But I knew I had to replace it which I did some time ago.

OK made me look too...mine is a -1. I got it on gun auction about 7 years ago. The first S&W I bought was a 8 3/8 M29 at a pawn shop in Columbus GA back in '85 when I joined the Army. I left it at home when I went to Korea for 18 months and when I returned someone had left finger prints all over it that marred the bluing, so I traded it for a 629 nd which I traded for a Dan Wesson .44.

These stocks were on the no dash I got recently. No idea if they are original to the gun.

Mine is a 4" with N853XXX. I've had it for over ten years. A local friend and fellow forum member also has one but I don't know his serial number. At one of the Tulsa shows I saw all three barrel lengths on display NFS.

With the intention of adding something to this post, no intention to hijack it. I have an 8 3/8" 629 no dash, P&R, serial number N8671xx on the way. It is coming in the blue two piece box with what appears to be an original end label. The posts here show 629s with higher and lower serial numbers that have the wood presentation box.
My question is: When did S&W cease shipping 629s in the wood presentation boxes?

Guessing they stopped shipping in pc with the 629-1. Here’s the label of my 1982 4” 629-1 that came in cardboard box. (It was an RSR special run with Combat stocks,Magnaport, and polished trigger.)

The practice of shipping guns with the Mahogany Presentation cases was dropped sometime in 1983. However the same case could been bought as an aftermarket item until sometime in 1985. At this time S&W changed the case design(inside and out)! This is the way your 1982 gun might have been shipped!
Here are my 629 no dash guns! I have changed the grips to the S&W Presentation grips
saemetric, Sir, I believe your end label is not original! The label on that era box would have been computer generated!

Probably one of the last hand written. I bought the gun brand new from RSR Wholesale in 1982. It had this label. I think the computer labels had the serial numbers beginning with the ABC type.
