Model 29 Grip Fit
I just picked up this gorgeous Unfired outside of the factory 29-2. It looks like it was built 1975 or 1976.
It appears that the wooden grips have a poor fit. Is this common?
Thanks for any feedback.

Yes that space at the bottom of the grip frame is pretty common. As with anything some stocks fit better than others. As long as they don't move around on the gun once they are installed it's nothing to worry about.

The pin and the blued metal cylinders (maybe the wrong term) are what really lock the grips in place. Like series guy said, the space around the rest is fairly common.

Nearly all Target stocks were "universal fit", which meant they had enough production dimensional tolerance to fit nothing perfectly.
As noted above, the stock pin on the frame and the washers on the panels keep them in place. All looks well with yours. Enjoy!

The stocks on your Model 29-2 are normal as most have stocks that fit that way. If your 29-2 dates to 75/76, it is possible the stocks are not original to your gun. The stock circles with a blue oxide finish were discontinued before then in favor of stainless steel stock circles. Just a possibility as there is no way to really know for certain.

Thanks for all of the replies. I’m probably going to go with a custom set of wooden grips because the gun is so nice. Any suggestions?

Many of us have used Culina Grips. Do a search here and you’ll find several members showing photos of their guns.

Are those aftermarket stocks?
It's also possible that those are aftermarket stocks from some manufacturer other than S&W. I don't recall seeing that much ink stamping inside standard S&W target stocks.

The stocks on the 29-2 are by S&W. The number shown on the right stock panel is the part number. The serial number dates the revolver to sometime in 1976.

This is a set of stocks by Keith Brown on a Model 29-2. The wood is red heart. The fit and feel of these stocks are superior. Click on the photo for a better look.

The Kieth Brown grips are beautiful, but I am guessing that the delivery may be a bit lengthy. Most of us go with the Culina LLC grips. You can google them. Lots of wood choices

Mr Brown’s website states he stopped accepting new orders yesterday. It suggests that status may go on for a while.
