I have been looking for one of these for about a year now, and one finally popped up on gunbroker. New condition, mis-matched box. The only price points I can find are from several years ago, so they are somewhat dated. It's currently listed at $2895 starting bid, and I was curious to see if somebody smarter than me could weigh in on what a reasonable price might be for this pistol. I'm not above trying to scrape that together, but also don't want to grossly overpay. Thanks

Anything more than 5-600 is grossly overpaying....There are lots of mis-marked guns and they usually do not bring that kind of premium.

Now if it is a lettered prototype or something extra special from the factory, then it may be worth a premium. But - ONLY a factory letter will tell for sure.

I wish I could get that kind of money for one. I'd just ream the cylinder to .357mag and change the barrel.

I've been looking for one of those as well (Oklahoma State Highway Patrol) and if that's what they go for, I'll likely not be getting one.

That said, I'm interested to see what it takes, and I will wonder if my 10-6 .357 NYSP is of similar value.

I'm of the opinion that it is worth more on the order of around 1000-1100. Granted, its like new and has a (mis-matched) box, and there were only 750 I believe that were made, but 3k is extremely high. For reference, I paid 725 shipped iirc for my 10-6 NYSP pistol, although it has some wear and no box. Wonder how far I can talk him down...

It's actually a factory pistol produced for the Oklahoma highway patrol. 750 units were made, along with a subsequent commemorative. It was later designated the model 65.

Personally, absolutely not worth that much unless you've just got money to burn and want it bad enough. It was the prerequisite to the Model 65, as some have said, and a special order for an Oklahoma Police agency.



The real question is will you ever see a finer example? The only thing that could be better is that the box matches the gun. How long will you search to find that more perfecter example? Because that one is darn near perfect.

I too am watching that ad, but not because I'm in the market. I just want to see if it sells.

I sort of have two rules when buying any gun even one I might think about selling which I think applies here. First rule buy only what I like even if the plan is to resale if it never sells no big deal. Second rule never pay more than I think I can get for it later on in case the need arises to sell the gun. In the case of this gun I think it is at least two, and probably three times what the gun is worth. Rarity doesn't always mean more valuable. The market on this one will be narrow. This one is making it's second time around, and my guess is unless you buy it it won't sell this time either. Now if you are wealthy, or no payments on anything, and are sitting on a pile of cash go for it. I personally would buy a Triple Lock for the kind of money we are talking about here. Your money your decision happy shooting either way.

Sorry about your bad luck when it comes to finding what you are looking for. The longer the search goes, the more impatient we become, the more we start asking ourselves if 3k is reasonable for a revolver that should be priced no more than 1k. Unless you are a sucker for Oklahoma law enforcement revolvers, you can always just buy a model 65 eh?

At 3k it's cheaper to buy a donor revolver and have it engraved with the logo you are looking for.

I've seen two non-boxed examples for $600 and $650 respectively. Stay vigilant.

A long time ago, I thought it would be cool to collect a sample of every pinned and recessed .357 Magnum Model that Smith & Wesson produced (including each "-" engineering change). After a year or so I discovered that I really loved the model 27 and I gave up my pursuit. BUT... I did run down one of the 64-1 .357 Magnums, along with its sister, the 10-6 .357 Magnum. Neither was what anyone would call collector condition. Both were well-used and had lost their factory PC magnas. In addition, the 64-1 had been bead blasted at some point in its life. BUT... they were uncommon, hard to find, and at the time they were a P&R model that I did not have in my collection - so I snapped them up. I've never lettered either of them, but I believe that they will letter. I did not pay anywhere close to $2.9K for either of them and I would not have been a buyer of either at anything close to $2.9K...

There's a website called Oklahoma Shooters Association that has a lot of current and ex law enforcement members including Highway Patrol and it seems like someone had one for sale a while back for 7-8 hundred. You might join the website and ask some questions and check their classified section.

From a practical perspective? No way. From a collectible perspective, all depends on your priorities.
