Default Question on N Frame Stampings

I actually have 2 questions. I have a model 25-2 which has the heavy barrel and the wrong rollmark of '1950'. A letter from Mr. Jinks confirms that it was sent this way. Another forum member says all 1950 and 1955 marked barrels have the gun's serial number stamped on them. Mine does have the correct number, but stamped vertically and a different font. I have posted for other members with the same configuration to let me know what they have, but only one reply and their's does not have a serial number on the barrel.

Second question is about the stampings on the frame under the stocks. I have seen the guns that were refinished at the factory having a rectangle with "R-Bl" stamped inside, and the date on the other side. Mine has a square with a "B" on one side and what appears to be a "313" on the other as a possible date. But it is stamped horizontally and not vertically like others I have seen. The gun was shipped in September 1976.

I know others have said that anything is possible with S&W, but what do I have here?

Don't know a thing about M25's so I'll leave that but the B in a square (and the circle D) are inspector stamps.
The "313" (and the A2, D7 & D9) are fitters stamps. I think it was probably meant to be G13 and one of the four should also be on the yoke with the 16254 assembly number.

There is a 'G13" stamped in the yoke. Thanks for that info. I was thinking that was a date that it might have gone back to the factory. There is a lot of good information on this forum.

John, I am assuming that I the forum member you spoke of in this thread.

There seems to be some confusion here. First, there was a "Model of 1950". Then there was a "Model of 1955". Then there were the respective Model 25 and Model 26. My comment regarding the serial number being in the ejector shroud of all "Model of 1950" and "Model of 1955" was not meant to include the Model 25 or Model 26.

Yeah, this sounds confusing too. Same thing applies to a lot of other models of S&W revolvers. Is a K-22 Masterpiece a Model 17? Is a Model 17 a K-22 Masterpiece? There is a difference between a Model Name and Model Number, even when the guns with a model number are still referenced by the older model name.

Hope this latest "mud" helps.

Charlie

The stampings on your Model 25-2 are normal for a revolver made in the mid-70s. The serial number stamped in the extractor rod shroud is of the same type of font as several 44 Magnums I have that were made in the 70s. The reason for the stamping is unknown, but possibly the revolver was taken apart during manufacture and the barrel was numbered to keep it with the correct parts. Other reasons are also possible, but what they are is anyone's guess.
