Default **New grips!** 29-2 first range trip

**Ready to hit the range in an hour or so, got the stag grips from Grashorn and the adapter from BK today. The grips feel great though the adapter doesn't fit so well against the frame, a bit of a gap on the right hand side. Regardless I'm now truly ready for a bbq **

Last weekend I got out to the range with my new-to-me 4" 29-2 (from 1978 according to S&W). The only ammo I had on hand was 240gr swc .44spl from a company called Grizzly. Found it at Sportsman's Warehouse from when I had a 3" 624.

Anyway-my first time shooting a revolver I only go to 10 yards to see how it/I do. The hits upper right on the target where the first rounds, adjusted the rear sight and did better.

Put a couple of cylinders through when it bound up. Turned out the ejector rod loosened up. I was able to get it finger tight but want to take it in to my gunsmith just to have him make sure it gets tightened to specs.

Really love a 4" N in such an iconic caliber. Might just need another set of stag grips to make it mine. Waiting on a beautiful Hank Sloan style holster to arrive any day. It's a little dirty from shooting but it cleaned up just fine.

I have a 25-5 in 45 Colt that, except for the grips, looks like a twin to your 29.

Very nice! To me these 4 inch heavy barrel adjustable sight N frames are the most aesthetically pleasing revolvers Smith ever made.

Agree with S&W Fan the 4" original style barrel is the best looking version kinda like a .357 Combat Magnum on steroids.

On a side note IIRC S&W originally introduced the .44 Mag with a 6.5" barrel in early 1956 with a small amount of 4" versions shipping later at the end of the year in Nov/Dec 1956.

Interestingly the S&W .357 "Combat Magnum" began regular shipment in early 1956 and only as a 4" gun...
(6" versions do not appear until 1963) ...
Guessing its 4" barrel may have influenced the name "Combat Magnum" being the .357 version of the 4" "Combat Masterpiece".

For that reason IMO S&W really should have named the 4" .44 Magnum version The S&W .44 "Combat Magnum" .
Likewise in 1963 when the 6" Model 19-2 was introduced it should have been named The S&W KT-357 Magnum Masterpiece.

I have two 4” -2’s and a 6.5”. I love them all, but a 4” 29, may be my all time favorite revolver.

Ejector rod loosening is a common issue with many revolvers. This is one area where the threads being bone dry is desirable as bone dry thread have more friction than they would if lubricated. I always check my ejector rods for loosening just about every time I open the cylinder.

That is a nice looking 4 inch Model 29-2. Take good care of it, don't beat it to death, and it will provide you with decades of satisfaction.

Another range trip coming up later today. Now that the ejector rod is properly tightened up looking forward to a fun time, report to follow. I’m also waiting on a nice set of stags to arrive to go with the BK grip adapter I got earlier this week

Took the 29 back to the range this evening and ran some Federal .44 magnum 240gr jhp through it. Needless to say I didn't run more than 5 cylinders through as the recoil was stout as expected. The stag grips with grip adapter felt perfect though I do enjoy the original target grips on it as well.

The first target shows the target at 20 yards, the holes on the extreme right of the"9" ring were the first rounds. The taped over were from the last cylinder, taped them over for visibility in the photo.

The second target was the 3rd cylinder, notice 2 rounds went through the same hole lol. The gun shoots to poa/poi. Interestingly I was more accurate with the 629-1 I used to have with the same ammo. Hmmm. Regardless I really like this gun and while I definitely won't be running many magnums through it I will take it out now and then with some .44spl ammo.

With the empty box of .44spl I ran last time:

No need to apologize for the dirty gun pics...some of us enjoy seeing them. The stags and adapter suit your gun well. I much prefer specials when I take my 4" magnums to the range.
Enjoy the 'BBQ" !

I bet it rips and snorts with magnum loads, not to mention muzzle blast.
