Default Model 10 w/2.5" bbl

How many Model 10s did S&W manufacture with a 2-1/2" barrel?

Not many. Maybe around 1,000. They were built for the FBI and Michigan State Police. Most of those in the wild seem to be ex MSP guns. I’ve seen three in person, all in the hands of one dealer at the Oaks, Pa gun show last February. I hesitated, and by the time I got my wallet out they were gone.

Thank you sir. I saw a pic in SCSW 4th with the caption "Some basic Model 10 configurations." I recognized both the 4 and 3" versions and realized that the bottom gun was longer than 2". I feel that would be the optimal barrel length for a non shrouded K Frame. Love to get my hands on one.

Here's a photo of mine. It is from the MSP batch.

The letter states "This shipment was for 250 units ordered for the MSP. The original order for this length was from the FBI, but a few other departments became interested in special barrel length Model 10 as a concealed carry revolver."

Your gun looks new! Were these ordered and maybe remained unissued?

Thank you for sharing!

Mine has been shot, but it certainly doesn't appear to have been carried much. It is my suspicion that most of the use occurred after it was sold as surplus.

SOG bought all of the Michigan guns back in the mid or late 90s. They put an ad in GUNLIST for these and other guns. The picture they used was of a square butt 10 with a cut off looking bbl. Pic was not clear at all. Some other dealer/collector saw this add and bought ALL of SOG's 2 1/2 inch model 10s, after confirming what they really were. I bought two of these from this second dealer. They were indeed, like new in appearance. They were $700 each.

If you want one, fine. But recall that FBI soon went to a three-inch barrel, the Model 13.

I think the logical item of this sort is M-65. You get .357 chambering and a stainless gun.
