My friend’s “NYSP” John Jovino Highway Patrolman
I know, you probably thought it would be snub nose like those they are famous for here. In 1983 my friend wanted his first handgun and I turned him on to the Shotgun News ad From Jovinos that we’re selling mint 4” Model 28-? for $189. After a 20 year hiatus I saw my friend and his gun collection now includes Colt Pythons, SAA, and Uberti sixguns.
My question, this gun is marked NYSP. What do you know about these and were there lots of them? I think so since the ad was up for a long time. Sorry, no pic of it, but just picture a HP with about 95% and target trigger & hammer which I thought unusual.

Do you remember if these were State Police turn-ins? If they were, there were probably quite a few. I seem to recall reading somewhere about an order for guns from NYSP at around 5,000. I don't remember Jovino's ads in SG News at all, so I'm no help there.
A bit of trivia I am certain of, though, is having target options on a gun ordered by a department is frequently nothing more than the armorer's, firearms instructors, or even the department chief's personal preference. In my own experience it's surprising how those things count more than practicality in so many categories of department equipment purchases.

I always took for granted they were police turn ins but this many years later I can’t remember if they said it in the ad. I think so. I also kicked myself for not getting one. But when my friend bought his, I was buying my 4” Model 24-3.

I do remember the Jovina ads in Shotgun News back then. I had a subscription to the magazine and also an FFL at the time. It seems he had a lot of police turn-ins at the time and sold them at reasonable used-gun prices. I did get a Colt turn-in from him which was well used.
Jovina also got large orders of new Colts from the factory and modified them before selling as new. For instance, I got a Python and a Gold Cup which he had refinished in the then-new process of electroless nickel. I believe this was just before Colt started using that finish. I still have those two guns.

I think that the NYSP 28s all had factory red ramp and white outline sights from the factory. Kinda makes them different also the NYSP stamp.
People have an interest in them today

My friend’s gun did have red ramp and white outline like RdrBill’s above. I think it came with service grips but he immediately put Rubber Pachs on it which it still wears today.

Matt, no matter how many were sold or issued your friend has an iconic revolver in many different ways. I hope he continues to enjoy it for what it is.

Received this one yesterday. I’m surprised there is not more information floating around out there. Mine is N545291. Thanks member moosedog.

It looks identical to my friend’s as to condition and features (target T&H, red ramp, etc.) except grips now. Is it a -2? I forgot to look.

Yes it’s a -2. I searched the forums here. It seems there just aren’t that many posts that are filled with fun facts that I could find.

Jovino was a large police supply outlet and S&W distributor, many years ago they had Smith produce a small run of 3” heavy barrel, square butt model 60’s. I put in an order for a couple dozen and had the dept. star engraved on the side plate, individual officers purchased the pistols from the police association. I carried that pistol for plain clothes work for quite some time.
I just found a 2012 classified ad run here with one of the 2” pistols for sale as I understand my conversation with Jovino many years ago 500 2” and 500 3” heavy barrel pistols were manufactured.
