Very old S&W Model 10
I was wondering what someone here might be able to tell me about this gun. A friend of mine's mother died, and she had this gun and he gave it to me. P1000328.jpg

It's an M&P with the 4" standard barrel. Without at least part of the serial number off the butt, can't really say anything else.

Looks like someone fiddled up the rear side plate screw.

Judging by the grip it is post 1968, lacking the diamond around the screw. It will have the model number in the frame , visible when the cylinder is
open. Should be 10- probably 7. The barrel is pinned so it's prior to 1982.
Say thank you to your friend.

Have a look here for needed information:

However, let's play . If the parts (like the stocks) are all original, it is a model 10-something from between 1967-1981. If it has mismatched parts it could be as old as the mid-late 1950s.
