MODELS 10,11,12,45 Aircrewman and their pre-model

I will say a pre Model 12. At the time, S&W called it a .38 Military & Police Airweight. My guess is that it shipped around 1957. The factory introduced model numbers in 1957, but many weren't stamped until 1958.

I have a model 12-2 with a "C" prefix serial number a fair bit higher than yours. But it sure looks very similar. Might want to make sure yours has a steel cylinder, although that should not be an issue with the relative lateness of yours. I gather the civilian aluminum cylinder was discontinued in about 1954.

Thank you for the replies.
Consensus says, late 1950’s M&P Airweight Model 12 6 shot revolver.
Much appreciation!

It is only a Model 12 if it is marked Model 12 on the frame, behind the yoke. The fourth photo in your first post shows no model marking. You have a .38 Military & Police Airweight.

Check it for frame cracking where the barrel screws into the frame.
Swing the cylinder out, turn the revolver upside down and look at the area of the frame next to the flat underside of the barrel, between the barrel and the cylinder window opening - inside the area that is covered up by the yoke when the cylinder is closed.
Don't shoot anything but light loads with lead bullets if it is indeed an aluminum framed (airweight) revolver.

There are a number of M&P’s in that serial range on record, up to a C408-, all pre-Models, that shipped in 1957, so your C405- was definitely manufactured that year.
Shipping is a different story. In fact, I have a C402- pre-Model that didn’t ship until January 1959.
