Factory finish question
A blue steel S&W 57 that was returned to the factory and nickeled is a factory nickel gun. Refinished, but factory. Does this hurt the value? If so, by how much? Thanks.

If paperwork to prove it’s factory refinishing, not by much except to a purist collector type. If it’s going to be a shooter, then none.

Thank you. When I bought it years ago the receipt was in the box. I glued the receipt to the inside of the lid. I sold that gun in 2014. I assume the receipt is still there.

To a collector, originality is important, so it would be a significant flaw. Collectors want guns to letter as original.
I bought a very nicely factory refinished 3rd model HE Wolf & Klar about ten or 12 years ago. If I recall correctly, the gun was from the late 20s and the refinish from the 1950s. The refinish was in excellent condition. Because it was a refinish I got it auction for what I estimate to be a third to a half less than an original finish in that condition would have cost me.
I thought it a great deal, but I think a serious collector would not have had interest in it.

I purchased it and sold it with full disclosure. The person I sold it to has passed. Another party purchased the handguns from the estate and is not pleased with this one.

Not your problem, ColbyBruce. You have done nothing wrong, and everything right: Full disclosure when you sold it.
The end.

Sounds like the person who bought it from the estate has an issue with whomever did the estate sale. You have nothing to do with it. Not your problem.

It is my problem because it is en-route to me at my former address.

Generally, Model 57’s aren’t rare or collectible anyway, so who would care that much.

It is my understanding that an ex S-I-L made an offer to the estate for all the S&W, Colt, and Walther handguns without inventorying the items; he relied on his memory from a few years back. All the valuable things were gone.

Caveat emptor is always in play.
Not liking the sound of “...enroute to me at a previous address...”. Is he sending it to you or to an ffl?

Why would it be sent to you at your former or current address?

I assume directly to my former address as no dealer was mentioned.

Because he is unreasonable and that former address is all he had.

Unless you have a current FFL at that address, whoever shipped it broke Federal gun law and could face serious jail time.
Their problem, not yours. If it gets to you, report it to ATF and be done with it.

How does that have anything to do with you?

Why does he want to send it to you at all if you didn't sell it to him?
Does he expect you to refund his money? If so he is being a lot worse than unreasonable. I would say he is unhinged.
It's not your problem. If it gets delivered to your former address, that's his problem. If it does somehow get forwarded to you at your current address, refuse to accept it. Insist that the carrier return it to the nut job who sent it.

One tip-off to look for; Smith and Wesson never nickel plated the hammer or trigger.
