Default Nice 27-2 with 3 1/2 barrel at gunshow. Expensive?

I saw a nice 1974 vintage 27-2 with the 3.5" barrel this weekend....was a 98% or so revolver, no box. Seller wanted $2,100. I passed on it....figured it was a bit high priced. I have not been in the market for any S&Ws lately. Have prices gone up that much?

These were very highly priced about 2-3 years ago but values have come down from there. Figure about $1300 as you describe this one.

Model 27 with 3.5-inch barrel
is merely a big, clunky .38.

Others may see it differently.

The S&W 3 1/2" N frame revolver is all business...

It was my first pick in a S&W revolver 50 years ago and still is today.

I've own a passel of 'em.... I gave just a little over a hundred dollars each for the first two.

That N frame can sure nuff handle those old Super Vels from the 70's.

Just a few that I have carried over the decades.

**The current market value would be around 1250.00 in my ballpark.

This is a very high price. Of course any seller can ask any price and see if one will pay it. If you are looking for a shooter you can do just as well with a model 28 4" for a lot less money.

$2100 sounds way too high for where I shop; maybe $1200+/- is what I'd expect. Bought a four inch with case/tools, maybe fewer of those than 3.5s, for $900 last year and a six inch for $750. At this point I don't think S&W (or any manufacturer) prices are rising much. Keep looking, you should find one for a lot less than $2100.

Others do see it differently. I have four of them and love them
but that doesn't make them worth twice as much as a 4" 27
in my opinion. And BTW big clunky N frame .38s are great

True and one of the most "serious" looking ones too. Over my Oehler 35P it doesn't give up that much velocity to my 5" & 6" 27's either

That price even sounds high for California, where S&W prices are typically 20% higher than in free states.

I have a 28-2 4" and a 27-3 4", but I still need to acquire a 27-2 or earlier 3.5" N-Frame. Yes, it is a need!

Also looking for a 25-9 4" .45 Colt with the fluted cylinder with a nice shiny bluing job...not that un-fluted matte black version.

Take note of the falling prices of new firearms. The economy is about to tank and people are going to want to sell some stuff to pay the bills. I expect some really good deals coming up here soon. Just a guess.

$2100 and no box, no papers, not NIB? No way. That's asking nearly twice its actual value.

I have yet to see one out west in that condition for less than $1500. I happily dropped $1500 and change for an “S” serial number (1965) this past December - talked em down from $1799. I wanted it and was tired of looking. I’d rather drop a few hundred extra on a desirable gun than on an expensive surf and turf dinner that will be eliminated the next morning.

I picked up a re-blued 3.5” pre 27 in October from a buddy for $1,000. Looks great wearing Farrants.

Default Some of my big clunky "38's" - and a 44

Some of my collection of big clunky, chunky, "big-bore" S & W's.

All great shooters, some safe queens (but used...just a tad less than others).

Favorite(s)? Model 28 4" mostly, then M27-2 3.5". Dang serious shootin iron here folks!

Ok...Ok... yes I do have to cheat a tad with the Model 29 using 44 Special Cowboy action ammo. 2 cylinders of full load Maggies and I'm pretty well done for the day.

Enjoy...……….and shoot me a PM when you are done, done, done with your big ol clunkies that no one in the whole world wants anymore. I'll even buy you a brand new fantastic plastic in caliber of your choice for even up trade. How's that for a deal..you get brand new, in box (er...plastic case probably), unfired, all docs, grips, mags, tools etc. for a crummy old heavy Smith & Wesson.

$2,100.00 is a bit on the salty side for price. If it were me, given today's economic issues, I would wait a bit. I believe the market will be flooded with competitively priced examples

I've always had a fondness for N frame S&Ws.

The 3 1/2" N frame 357 Magnum is a 'Man's Size' sidearm.

Don't get me wrong, I've owned several K frame 357s and have worn a couple plum out...
The K frame 357 IMHO are great starter size revolvers for women and children.

I don’t know who, but it did turn out nice - assuming it was reblued. I say that because the roll marks are a little soft in one spot on the barrel, however the rest of the gun, especially the sideplate look perfect. It came with the original grips.

2100 seem high to me that price is getting closer to a pre-27.
I picked up this one about a year ago and have about 900 in it including shipping and transfer fee. It came with the original numbered stocks but even n frame magnas are to small for my hands, the trigger shoe was on it when purchased and I really haven't decided to leave it on or not.

I picked up this '68 vintage S-series, (no box/papers) about 6 months ago for $750.00. So yes, $2,100.00 is WAY expensive.
BTW: This one came with the original magnas, but I like these stocks better.

Best regards,

I've always wanted to visit Utah. I just might have to after I retire in a couple years. I have a big safe full of old S&Ws I have picked up over the last 40 years driving around rural Indiana, that I am going to start selling off, and one of them is a 98% Pre-27 3.5, from 1956, that I paid $700 for about 10 years ago at a tiny little gun show in a tiny little town that happened to be on my way back from a run. :-)

Utah is a beautiful state with very diverse topography.

My 1955 3.5" pre-27 was a very nice gun with matching numbers including the grips.

I had a good friend sell the gun for me because that's what he does. He's actually sold quite a few for me and I'm very pleased with everything he's done for me.

The price is delusional even before the economy came down. 3.5'' is a typical carry length. If you can carry such a massive N-frame cylinder you may as well get away with a 4'' barrel. 4'' N frame are the sweet spot for me, they balance well, look good, great accuracy and can be had for $500 all day long in this business climate even in great condition. Let this one go and get a 28 or even better a 657 or even better a 629 pre-lock, utilize the large cylinder with the suitable large holes. Paid $500 for my near unfired 629-1 last year sans grips.

[QUOTE=keith44spl;140698087]I've always had a fondness for N frame S&Ws.

The 3 1/2" N frame 357 Magnum is a 'Man's Size' sidearm

keith44spl, I would agree with you on the business purpose of this great N frame. Here's one that was probably all business during it's time on duty. It went to the Dutchess County, NY Sheriffs Office in July, 1954 with a lanyard ring and off-set serial number to accommodate the serial number; ''Poughkeepsie'' is penciled on inside of one grip panel along with the original LEO owner's name and address. Those were the days. He kept it after retirement in this slick little Lawrence gun case.
