Opinions Please - Update Post #56
From a purely aesthetic standpoint, which of these K-frame stocks do you like better? The Hogue's on the left or the Altamont Ropers on the right?
Thanks.
Adios,

The Altamonts complement the gun and the Hogues detract from it.

Ropers look better to me. The grips on the left would look good on a 80's stainless revolver.

Neither look "right" to me but most of my S&W revolvers are wearing Pachmayr and I fully understand that many folks would upchuck at the sight of them.
To your question, the Altamonts are far more attractive, no matter if they are mounted on a S&W, sitting in their package or jammed under a closet door and used as a door stop. Every single thing about that set of Hogue wood is turning my stomach. The curves, the finger grooves, especially the color and even the grain of the wood, just YUCK. So if it's one or the other, it's the Altamont stocks on the right.

Altamonts always look better than anything Hogue makes.
Edit, of course factory targets are first choice.

Purely on looks ........I'd keep looking!!!!!!!
I like the single finger groove Hogue for shooting
Altamont's look like cheap knockoffs to me..... checkering isn't deep or crisp

Hogue does make grips that would look better than those.

Which K frame are they on? I've never seen combats in that color. They are interesting. If that K frame is a 4" or less I pick the Hogues. I hate the look of the new S&W grips so I pick the Hogues if the barrel is longer than that. No checking looks better to me than the new style

Those Hogues look totally out of place to me. Of the two , the pseudo Ropers - but as others have said - darker.

The checkering on the Ropers look too shallow to me, I don't like the cheesy look and I don't think I could get used to them. I like the rubber Hogue grips but I haven't tried the wood grips. I prefer dark, checkered wood so I guess both of these are non-starters for me.

For looks, the Ropers, but for shooting, whichever one fits your hand the best.

grips?
For after market grips I prefer Adhrends, Keith Brown's, or Culina's! Of the choices I have here, I would say the Ropers, but they are too shinny and the checkering looks off!

Bob,
I'm liking the Hogue's. Finger groove with very nice color & grain.
Liking your target hammer & trigger S&W wearing them too.

My hands do the looking as my eyes are on the target.
If the Hogues fit, it's a bullseye!
Mother of Pearl Hogues like that would be spectacular.
The ones on the right are not right.

At the OP.
I'll say it different. I positively hate, both aestetically and practically, any grips, stocks, "shoes", you name it, with finger grooves in them.
There. I said it and feel better already.

I don’t like the looks of either. But a screwdriver can fix them, assuming you have access to original grips. If the Hogues shoot better I would like them better than the Altamonts. Actually I hate the Altamonts, they look like bad repros. The Hogues look unattractive but purposeful.

Between the two pictured the Altamont Ropers are more aesthetically pleasing - don't care for THAT PAIR of Hogues which I assume is Goncalo Alves.
I would rather have a pair of Hogues with another color - have a lot of Hogue grips on guns even the "ugly" rubber.
All the aftermarket grips that try to emulate the appearance of the Smith's classic target stocks are way too "skinny" in my experience. And they all cause me discomfort at the base of my thumb firing magnums. This includes Smith's current factory wood grips.

Here's the story. First, I'm not looking to buy any new stocks for the gun in question (Model 15-3)...
The Altamont Ropers were on my 6" 19-4...
I replaced them with a set of smooth goncalo-alves, book-matched factory target stocks...
So now I have the Ropers available and I wasn't sure if I wanted to replace the Hogue's on the 15-3 with the Altamont Ropers - hence the survey.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

The Altamont Ropers are the best " Looking" of all three .
Attractive wood and the classic checkering pattern...timeless good looks .

Replace them. I am not a fan of the one piece Hogues, and the Altamont grips look great.
