Nickel Model 18-4 - Just how scarce are they??
So a local friend of mine happens to own two nickel plated Model 18-4's
He has found them on rare occassion on the odd-ball auction
The catalog states that the nickel guns were produced, but not cataloged and also states that they bring a 75% premium.
Anyone have an idea how many may have left the factory?? And are they truly scarce??

It is a rare one if it can be documented as factory original, probably on the same order as nickel model 17s. I doubt anyone knows the exact number, as they were produced individually or in small batches as special orders.

Pre !8 Combat master piece and nickel 18.....My nickel 18 started life as blue. Sent it back to Smith in the erarly 70's to be nickeled. My BIL did the same thing with a 17.

I've never seen one either but the old rule of thumb was only about 10% of revolvers were nickeled at the factory. That rule might be for N-frames. It seems that nickeled guns were very common from S&W during the 1800s.
