The beginning of collecting Smith & Wesson revolvers for me, started with my second handgun, a brand new model 60-4 in the summer of 1991. I saw one in the display case of a local gun shop and fell in love with it. They were so new at the time, I remolded a used DeSantis holster for a standard 3" J frame, to fit the full lug barrel. I still have the gun that has lead me down this slippery slope 30 S&Ws and 29years later.
It's funny, this post just made me realize, I've only bought 4 new S&W revolvers over the years. 60-4, 640, 65LS and TR22-4. And that a lot of guys bought model 19s as their first gun.

In September 1967, I bought a Model 36 for my first BUG. Wish I still had it.

I'd owned a used 19 and a 15 that I sold/traded for my first NIB Smith & Wesson, a 4-inch 686, followed shortly thereafter with a NIB snubby 66-3 for concealed and off duty carry. Wish I'd kept that 686. The 66 is on my hip at this posting.

Mine was also a 6 inch 66, mine a 66-2, also purchased in 1989! Not only was it my first new smith, it was my first handgun ever. I ignored the advice of starting with a .22 LR. As I was already an accomplished reloader, I figured .38 wadcutters wouldn't be much harder to master. Seems I was right.
It wore Pachmayr Grippers for years, I don't remember when I put these Professionals on it, they must not have lasted long. She has worn Ahrends Smooth Tacticals for about 9-10 years now

In the early 70's I purchased a new 4" Model 15. Was my first center fire handgun. As I recall it was $125 otd from a back porch dealer. A kind old
(he seemed old to me anyway) neighbor took a dumb kid under his wing and taught me how to reload. I used his equipment until I saved up enough to get my own. Been reloading .38's and various others for 50+ years. I can still see that old reloading shed in my mind's eye.

The first S&W revolver I purchased new was a Model 15-3 4 inch in 1968. I carried it for 9 years before trading it in on a new Model 19-4 nickel 4 inch that I carried until I retired 24 years later.

My first S&W was a Model 53 Jet that I bought at the Rod and Gun club of the post I was stationed at in Sandhofen, Germany just outside Mannheim. It was the Army Aviation Maintenance Center so there were always a lot of pilots around and they went through a lot of inventory. That was in late 1962.

I bought a new 28-2 4” blue in 1977. I sold it to my brother in the early 80’s to finance a new Python 6” that I kept until a couple of years ago until the prices went out of sight and sold. I Then talked my brother into selling it back to me and I still have it. Wonderful revolver. I’m planning on keeping it now.

Mine was a Mod 41, 5" Heavy Barrel. I traded a Mod 17 toward it that I had bought used. Ironically, the 41 is long gone, but I currently have 3 Mod 17/617's.

My first new S&W was this Model 14-6 that I bought in 1996 for $600 AUD. I later did the PPC enhancements including the aristocrat sight rid.

My first brand new S&W, and also the first handgun I bought with my own money, was a 625-6 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. I read an article on it and ordered one the very next day, taking delivery in the beginning of June 1996. Paid $425 plus tax. That price seems like a steal now, but it was more impressive at the time as I was only making $7 an hour. I still have it, one of my favorite revolvers.
It occurs to me that although I’ve owned about 100 S&W revolvers since being given my first (a 28-2) in 1989, very few were purchased new. Other than the 625-6 the only others were a 19-7, 625-7, 442-1 and 340 M&P. I mostly buy the guns I wanted in the 80’s and 90’s but couldn’t afford when they were new.

My first and only “new” S&W is this 2015 vintage 60-15.
Easy to carry and a joy to shoot (up to +p).
All others in my modest collection - J’s and K’s - range from 1968 to 1994 and were purchased “used”.
On the hunt for a birth year gun, though... (1955)

If my math is correct, I own 14 Smith and Wesson Revolvers. I have never bought "new" as in brand new from a store. A couple were presented as "NIB" by the sellers that I purchased from, but I don't think that counts here.

When I first came on our department my off duty gun was a nickeled Charter Arms undercover that I purchased because it was relatively inexpensive. After a year or so I wanted to upgrade and the police supply company happened to have a new Model 36 in nickel under the glass in the gun counter. The undercover was ok but not on the same level as the Model 36. My head swelled a bit walking out with it. That was in June of 1979. The first of several S&W’s purchased with the LE discount. I still have it.
Question, my 36 came with a sight adjustment tool but not a bore mop. Were SAT’s supplied with some fixed sight revolvers?

686-5Plus 5”
After I turned twenty-one, all I knew was that I wanted a .357magmun. So I proudly walked into one of the LGS asked to to see a .357. The salesman showed me the revolver and I was sold after I was told, “it’s a seven-shot”. My friends and I enjoyed the times of shooting and I enjoyed the times cleaning it. Still in excellent shape in original box.
This was long before the S&W collecting had started and glad now my first gun was a S&W. I had no idea what I had bought at the time, later the find out it was a “stocking dealer special”. 686-5 plus with a 5” barrel, hi-viz front sight and v-notch rear sight.
This one gun later started the craz to buy many more 686s. And yes, the bantams were on it when I first saw it sitting in the glass case.

My first, brand new S&W was a 6" 3T Model 14. I still have the Smith and it's box and papers.

I literally can not remember the last NIB revolver I bought. In fact, I bet it was a Dan Wesson SS 41 pistol pack in about 1980. I have never bought a new S&W. I just like older used guns.

My first New S&W was a model 19-4 bought in 1981. Had target hammer/trigger, red ramp front site, white outline rear and a rich deep blue finish. It was probably the worst gun S&W ever made from the Bangor Punta era. The first time I shot it and went to eject the shells the cylinder fell on the ground. Two of the cylinders required more trigger force to shoot and there was always some problem with the gun. Like a fool I kept it for 20 years but I vowed to never buy another S&W again.
Wasn't till 2003 when I purchased a 66-5, 2.5" barrel that I got a winner.

I purchased my first brand spank'n new S&W revolver right after I saw an inspiring article in "Guns & Ammo, or some such magazine. I don't know the year exactly, but S&W were supposedly making 3,000 4" barreled 625-6's in 45 colt, labeled as a "Mountain Gun". Mid 90's is about as close as I can get to guessing when it was.
I went to Tilford's Guns in Louisville the very next day, and asked Jack if I could still get one. He looked it up and said "Yep, I can have it here in 3 or 4 days."
So I ordered one. I'm still not sure how I was smart enough to order one that day, yet dumb enough to trade it off some 10 or 12 years later. I mean I got my money back & then some in the trade, and I carried it deer hunting, atv riding, and woods walking a lot! But the winds changed, and I suddenly needed a 1006. (which I don't have anymore either, but I still have the 1076 KSP I got in that trade)
The closest I've come to replacing it is a 25-5 (45 colt), and a 625-6 (45 acp). I'm keeping them both, but I sure miss that Mountain Gun.

My first new Smith & Wesson was a blue Model 19-3 with 6" barrel and 3-Ts. Bought in about 1971 at Montgomery Wards for about $140. Seems to be a repeated story here. Probably before the short barreled guns became so popular.

Unfortunately this the only picture I have of it.
Also evidence I dumped the combats for pachmayrs.

I bought a 4" blue Model 19-3 from Meltzer's Sporting goods on Outwater Lane in Garfield NJ in 1977. Paid cash $193, and the "old man" goes to the register, gets my change singing "One, two, six, ten; Meltzer takes your money again." Traded it away 4 years later. Joe

642 Airweight in summer 2015, my cousin liked it so I gave it to him- replaced it with a 442 Performance Center in early 2018. Those are the only two S&Ws I’ve ever bought NIB.

All of my Smith Revolvers have been "New to Me". To this day, never had a brand new 1! Doesn't bother me! Have not bought a new car in around 20 years. Bob

Model 57
My first new S&W revolver purchase was made right after I graduated from college and got my first job- 1978. It was a beautiful 4" blued Model 57 in the mahogany presentation case. I used to carry it around in a Bianchi shoulder holster, a la Harry Callahan (Model 29s were still hard to find in the late '70s). Actually, I really liked the .41 Magnum...it was a little less snappy than a .357, and a little milder than the .44 Magnum. The ammo was expensive, however, so that led to my first experiences with reloading. Unfortunately, my Model 57 was stolen when my apartment was burglarized later that year. I still have the presentation case- which is now earmarked for my 4" blued Model 29-2.

My first S&W purchased new, was a model 63 I bought for $260 in 1981. Got it home and noticed that the ejector rod did not correctly engage the barrel lug...took it back to the store, thinking it would have to go back to the factory under warranty....the clerk switched it our for another new one and changed the sn on the paperwork. Still have it and it is the first revolver with which I teach young ones to shoot.

Like many here, my first "New" S&W was not my first hand gun. Also, it was a very utilitarian purchase. In 1982, to celebrate our recent marriage, my wife suggested a new firearm. A 6" Model 28 soon came home to stay. It has served me well over the years, and still has one of the sweetest triggers I've ever fired.

This Model 15-4 that I've owned since the early 80s'. Still one of the finest shooters of the numerous revolvers I own.

My first brand new in the box S&W revolver was a six inch 28-2 that I bought for $178 OTD at Arvins Pawn and Jewelry Shop in Macon, Ga. If memory serves me, it was bought in 1980. I later bought a Bianchi 10L holster for it. I loved that revolver. Wish I'd not let it get away. Oh well. Hindsight. Sincerely. bruce.

14-3
14-3, 6-inch barrel, with target hammer and trigger, and magna stocks. Bought from a small gun store in Dallas 10/2/1970.

Price was $107.50 (plus tax), which was the MSRP at that time. I later upgraded to target stocks ($15.00).

Factory wadcutter ammunition was outragious at $4.00/box, so I bought a Lee Loader ($9.95) and started reloading my own for about $2.00/box.

I still have the gun, original grips/box/papers/tools, and the Lee Loader.

I was just over 17 years old, the 1968 Gun Control Act had recently (2 years) been implemented. My mother signed for me to buy a “new” S&W 4” Model 28. That was my first S&W handgun, and my first centerfire. I had already had 2 .22 rim fires....a Browning Nomad and a Ruger Single-Six! memtb

The first new S&W I ever bought was a 640 no dash in the early nineties. I still have it, and it often finds it's way into my carry rotation. It's funny but while I have many S&W's both revolver and semi auto, it is my only J-frame; and, I tend to carry it and my .40 S&W shield the most.

My first new S&W revolver was a model 17-? that I bought inn my early 30s. The tool pusher on a drilling rig I was on wanted it soooo bad and kept offering me more and money till I sold.Next days off I went looking foe another and all I could find was a model 18-4. Couldn't find a 6" and "settled" for the 4". Boy am I glad I did. That gun has been round butted, had thousands of rounds through it. Got holster worn and freckled form a time it got forgotten in a box of rig clothes. I have 4 other K frame 22s, a model 34, a Ruger Bearcat, get Semis and that little 18-4 still gets the most hip and truck time of the lot.

The first gun that I purchased myself was a S&W 10-5. I still have it today and just as starry eyed today as I was in 1970. Although not this one, I carried a 10-5 as a condition of employment for m any years. I had many partners in my career but the
10-5 never let me down. None were more faithful.

My first bought was my NIB M-640-1 .357 Magnum shipped in April 1995 in 2008.
It now wears a nice set of Combat grips.
It was my EDC up until 2014 when I replaced it with a M-642-1.
edit: ship date

My first Smith and Wesson, bought brand new at Tamiami Gun Shop in Miami in 1968, but not by me. It was a 16th birthday gift from my best friend’s father, a mentor who greatly influenced my life-long interest in firearms. My friend and I still shoot it regularly.

Boy, that was sure a good $15 spent. Those grips look fantastic. If you ever want to double your money on them, let me know.
