It Shipped between 1975 and 1977. That's according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition.

Best guess would be 1976. Post some pictures, we love pictures.

The serial number is on the bottom of the butt-frame.

It should match N 87 shown in your picture. N serial numbers started approx. 1969, and welcome to the forum.

The first model to use the N prefix serial numbers is the Model 28. I would guess N87 shipped sometime in 1970. Model 28-2, N925, shipped in May of that year. A 28-2 in the N237000 range most likely shipped in 1975.

Not on mine. No numbers there. The only numbers/letters on the pistol are those pictured.

Does your gun have target grips ? If so you have to remove them to see the serial number.

The serial number stamped is 18680. It's stamped in two locations but neither has the N prefix. An N87 is also stamped in two locations. Bottom of the butt frame and the inside of the cylinder frame.
Any ideas of the year on manufacture?
72-74 maybe?
Oh wait, that's 5 digits and early. Maybe 70-72?
