Default Unfired Model 28 Value

I'm looking to buy a 4" blued Model 28. It appears to be unfired and in like new condition. Serial number puts it in 1979. Comes with original box/papers. Seems like as good as it gets condition wise.

Any idea of a good price for it? Asking price is $1,600 which seems high to me and puts me in model 27-2 territory. But maybe the condition justifies the price?

I think the asking is pretty high... but I only appraise guns for what I would pay for them. I would think $1K tops.

Plain and simple, that is way too much. I have seen M28's increase in price in the last year.I saw 2 that were not new go for over 1000. A year ago you could get 4 or 6" from 600 to 750 shipped. 1600.00 is a dream for the seller and a nightmare for you IMO

The 4" and 6" typically are in the 600-700 range. They're 'duty' guns and were intended to be holstered and shot. If I acquired a what appeared to be unfired with box, I'd be shooting it. Be like buying a collector car and never driving it, meant to be driven.

The 28-2 is a very common variation. Even ANIB, it's not worth $1600. Keep looking.

To be clear, I'm not going to pay $1,600, but I was thinking about making an offer. They can always say no. Personally, I'm willing to pay a small premium for the right gun, so I was mostly trying to get a good feel for this group's thought on value. I suppose what these are selling for and the opinions on value can be different.

Appreciate the feedback so far.

There are plenty of them out there, but its easier to find a nice condition 6" model than the 4", still I am thinking if you allow a couple months of searching (part of the fun) you should be able to get one NIB for $1k give or take.

Yup. $1,000 max, $900 and I’d feel good about it.

Recently.. wasn't a 4"..

But a local ad ran for a ANIB 6" 28-2 and an ANIB Presentation case 6" 27-2..he was asking for offers of $1000 and above for "BOTH".

I really tried to talk him into selling them to me, but he accepted an offer from someone closer than me for $1100 of "BOTH"

He said he thought is was a fair price...yeah for the buyer..

First year HP with all goodies, LNIB, maybe close to that.
Late 1970s in that new shape, about $800-$850.

So I had initially seen it elsewhere, but just found the Gunbroker listing for the gun in question. Lots of pics showing condition. I guess it doesn't say unfired, so I'm not sure where I got that. And it turns out it's the 'buy it now' price that's $1,600. Current bid is $805.

Based on what you've all said up to this point, the bids are getting pretty close to what it's worth.

I bought a 6" 28-2 late s prefix, that had been shot very little in January. Paid $700 out the door, and think I paid a little much.... $1600 is outrageous....

Treat me like I know nothing about old guns (because it's mostly true). Are you noticing that they appear marred, like someone wasn't careful removing them or putting them back in? Or is there something more serious than that?

They look fine but regardless the gun is way to much money.

This six inch is from 1970 and I wouldn't argue that it hasn't been fired but it is pretty nice. I traded for it but as I remember the asking price was about $700 four years ago. $1600, as others have said, for "NIB" is high but if truly unfired outside the factory, no turn line, then maybe $1000. Not too many years ago I didn't think we'd ever see 28s for more than $500.

Last year I bought a 6 inch 28-2 with Goncalo Alves target stocks for $650.00. Probably 98% condition with original box. It was an estate gun. At the time, you could see many on Gun Broker with an asking price of $750.00 or more. I paid more than the blue book price out of consideration for the seller. Those high priced 28s on Gun Broker weren't actually selling at the time. But anyone who posted one for a fair price, usually sold promptly. The thing that gets me, is that sellers are removing the original grips and selling them separately. Even so they still want inflated prices.

I’d keep looking if it were me. Got this 1980 version last December for $500. No box and came with poor set of goodyears but appears to be little shot or carried.

$1600 for a Model 28 with the 4 inch (most common length) barrel and NIB? If you are buying two and they have sequential serial numbers. I'd say the seller is asking about twice what it is really worth.

In case anyone is curious, the gun in question ended up selling on Gunbroker for $1,179. I wasn't the winning bidder.

About a year ago I bought a 98% condition gun off of this forum and it had brand new looking factory service grips. Those aren't comfortable to me and I wanted a shooter so I told the owner he could keep the grips and probably get $80-$100 for them and asked if he would reduce the price that much for the gun with no grips. He did so I got an extremely nice4" 28-2 with no grips for $550 shipped.

About three years ago I bought a late 70s 28-2 4" on gunbroker. Had some holster wear and Pachmyers but it did have the box and paperwork. I paid $400+$25 shipping. I worked at an FFL at the time so no transfer fees on my end. I couldn't imagine paying $1600 (4 times the price) for the same gun in unfired condition.

In doing my albeit brief Gunbroker research on recently completed auctions, Model 28s of this era (late 1970s) can be had for $600-$800, but these usually have more wear and finish problems and don't come with the original box/paperwork. Shooters if you will. Anything approaching collector grade appears to be selling for $900-$1,200, with the example that spurred this thread selling on the higher end of the range.

I'm not necessarily suggesting that's what they're worth, but that is the range they're selling in.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. You helped me not overpay for the gun in question. I'll wait it out a bit.

I wouldn’t pay that. I’d much rather have a 4” shooter without box for $700 or less. Fortunately I already have one. Have a $500 for it 1.5 years ago.

$1600 is way too much for a 28 regardless of condition. For that money, I’d look for a like new 27.

Now you know what kind of a price range they sell for.

Now you decide how much you're willing to pay.

How often are you going to find a "4" blued Model 28 unfired and in like new condition Comes with original box/papers. Seems like as good as it gets condition wise."??

What's a few hundred dollars??

I agree. With this listing, I actually bid up to $1,100, but another bidder had put in something higher and I was getting outbid by the 'autobid' function. I didn't see any end in sight so I stopped. In reality, I've decided I want something I can shoot every so often and not worry about ruining the 'unfired' designation. That's the ultimate reason why I stopped where I did.
