48-3 ????? 48-4 not -3
i have been working nights . tonight is my last one.yay . i have an add on local classified website "I buy Smith&Wesson revolvers". so far it has been hit and miss on deals .traded for a couple early I frames. been texting back and forth with a fellow whose father passed in January . says he's been burdened with disposing of Dad's gun stuff a little at a time so as to not be overwhelmed .family members want nothing to do with them. i have only seen 1 cell phone pic but he is supposed to be holding for me a mdl 48-3 with an 8 3/8 inch barrel at what i think is a fair price ($600). grips are not original as it is wearing some rubbers . i'm not into the long tubes but if the gun is in as good of condition as he seems to think it is i can't pass on it . my question is do i buy and try to find a 4 or 6 inch to work a trade on or pass and wait for one with less barrel ? what do you fellows say ? kenny SORRY for rambling *** today is my 1 year anniversary on this site. a deal I was trying to make happen did . 48-4 not -3 but I am not complaining. wearing Pacs that were replace with some smooth targets I bought from another forum member. really glad to be part of this forum. you fellows rock. thanks, Kenny

Had the same gun and it handles great. You may like the long barrel.

I’ve got an 8-3/8” and a couple 4” S&W .22 MRF’s. It’s a great cartridge for taking small game or varmints. If you’re just looking for a plinker, stick with .22 LR. The ammo is a lot cheaper.
The 8-3/8” barrel gets the most out of the .22 RF Magnum cartridge for a revolver. Rifles or a 10” Contender barrel gives better performance, but handguns are a different ballgame. If I found another long barrel model 48 in excellent condition for $600, I’d be on it like a hobo on a ham sandwich!

Buy it. You can decide after you shoot it.

As others have said, buy it. I have three with 8 3/8 barrel and if I found another nice one for $600 I'd have four. Only other advice would be to check under those rubber grips as they can cover rust. You can find correct period stocks on eBay. Here's my 48-3 which also came with the wrong stocks. Pictures when you get it please. Good luck.

A 48-3 with 8 3/8 inch barrel is a desirable gun. The price is excellent for a 48 any dash with any length barrel. I would jump all over that deal if I were you. Good luck

From my viewpoint, that's an $800 gun (if condition warrants) for a $600 price. If I shot it and didn't like it then I would sell it for a profit.

OP- you might be surprised by the balance of the long tube. They handle better than most people think. Give it a shot you will probably like it.

In honor of this thread I went to the range (finally opened, had to shoot with a mask on) and took my 48-3 long tube. It is really fun to aim at a rock on the 100+ yard berm. I have liked .22WMR since I was a little kid and still do.
