My old friends Mod 60
Well my old shootingbuddy neighbor passed from old age. Well he left me his Model 60 and a nice holster. His brother called me over today. Its SN R181XXX. Can any of you folks tell me when this was born ? I also want to clean up NOT POLISH but renew the SS finish. I searched and came up kind of empty since I dont want it mirror polished. I want to regain a factory look. Its not bad just needs a little attention in honor of my buddy. Gonna miss the old neighbor. We always had a ball at the range. He was 20 years older than me but was one helluva shot. Thanks.

Sorry for your friend’s passing. The model 60 is like from late 1976.
There are posts here about using Scotchbrite pads of varying coarseness to duplicate the factory finish.

I use the geenish blue "fine" scotchbrite with a little 3n1 oil.

I found the green Scotchbrite too aggressive. If you do use it, press lightly at least to start. The grey version was not aggressive enough and was more useful to polish down the lines made by the more aggressive version. Like Goldilocks, I found a version that was 'just right'. The maroon colored version. Depending on how marked up the gun is now, you may wish to polish it with Simichrome or a similar product (toothpaste sometimes works well) before using the Scotchbrite. The marks made by Scotchbrite are directional. The factory finish on the stainless guns usually consists of one pattern of directional marks superimposed on top of another one.

The the frame and barrel should be swept lengthwise and cylinder around the circumference and not front to back on the cylinder ?its not banged up just usual swirly finish now. Also what factory grips came on it ? It has rubber on it now and not sure I like it

Sorry to hear of the passing of your shooting buddy but I will give him credit as you will still have part of him with you when you go to the range.

My sincere condolences for your loss. Friends are precious.
That's a nice looking little Chiefs. Hope you enjoy many fond memories of your friend as you shoot and clean it.

Your good friend has to be smiling. Great job. Good luck on the factories. Be patient as they are out there.

The Hogue Bantams that are on your Model 60 were put on there by someone who appreciated a good, usable grip on a J frame 38. Smiths Magna grips also known as "splinter" grips look nice but not so friendly on the range. Nice piece and a good friend, enjoy.

Yes sir. He did appreciate useability. I did find a set of Magna’s for it since I will not be carrying it and returned it to original state and I know he would approve. The Hogues went on my 442 PC which I carry daily. Is there a best way to clean up the upper round edge of the sideplate ? He obviously popped it off a few times

Model 60, new in the box purchased May 1971 for $96.00
I have one that I purchased new in May of 1971, for $96.00. Still have it along with the box. Bought it along with a 4 inch model 19, the week that I joined the police dept. Sold the model 19, for a 66 when they first came out, that I still have too.

Outstanding Job Sir! My 60, is an R195XXX and at one point I sent it back to the factory for a minor problem. I asked them to refinish it, as I nicked the barrel. It came back with a beautiful BRUSHED finish.
May you friend RIP and may you enjoy and treasure the fine gift he left you.

I was lucky to find this set of magnas. They look unused. No serial stamped and they are not the taiwan junk.
