Default 681 no dash: pics and question

Picked this one up looking pretty rough. Polished and swapped out the snow tires.

Edit: I put this in the wrong forum. Can a mod move it to the 1980+ forum?

This is on the backstrap. There’s a Hull Police Department outside of Baltimore, Maryland. I purchased the gun where I live near Houston, Texas.

The question: There’s a small crack (or something) where the crane meets the frame. I’ve never seen this before. What would cause this?

Looks like a bonafide cop gun. Where are your before shots?

681 is a great model, nothing you don't need, and built like a tank.

Stainless Steel is pretty easy to scratch. My guess is that is what you have instead of a crack. It may polish out with a little judicious application of Fitz. Just go slow and be really careful not to over do it.

The 681 is one of my favorite "all business" handguns. I feel the same about the 581, as well. I wish they'd made a 3-inch version back in the day (round or square butt). I'd have one of each!

Default Here is one....

....that I slicked up and then let get away. It started life as a San Antonio Airport Police Dept gun. I did some work and really made it a dandy carry gun. I may have to find another for myself someday.

Sorry, no before pictures of this one. It had a hard life of eating doughnuts, swilling airport coffee, and chasing cars out of the loading zones.

Yes. But they don't have a police department, it seems. Small unincorporated community.

I've lived in Texas only about 18 months, but showed this gun to my neighbors. First thing I asked them is "where is Hull?"

This is my guess too. It would be incredibly difficult to crack that frame in that manner.

Very nice revolver. I'm rather fond of my 581.

These are the ideal platform for the .357 Magnum, to my way of thinking. The lighter K-Frame isn't quite up to the job full time, and for the heavier N-Frame, it is no challenge at all. Too bad the 581/681 weren't P&R.

I have an M586, but really would like an example of both the fixed sighted L-Frames. What is a realistic price range for these? I have seen a few in the classifieds recently, but the prices seem too high (about $1,000 shipped).

There is a city of Hull in Sioux County, Iowa, and they have a police department.

There is also a city of Hull in Madison County, Georgia.

Nice find! I may be in the minority, but I think the Distinguished Service Magnum looks best wearing PC Magnas.

Those are factory Smith & Wesson Combat stocks. They have a love-hate type of relationship with folks.....either they fit your hands, or they don't. There are some that like them just for the aesthetics - I'm both. They fit me like they were made for me and they look great

Here is a dandy set on a 41 Magnum model 58

Thumbs up 681/581

Jack Flash , don't give up looking for them. i found the 581 on a local classified site and the 681 on GB and was the only bidder . 581 had a couple of spots of neglect in the finish . the 681 was a LEO trade in . was tastefully stamped in a couple of places and drawn on crudely or whatever it's called with an electric pencil . i'm a shooter and gatherer not a collector so i could live with them . if they had been pristine i probably would have considered them out of my price range . funny thing is they shoot great .probably as good as NIB but i'll never know . kenny

That "crack" you are concerned about is the end of the yoke where the cylinder swings out. Open the cylinder and watch as you close it slowly.

Nope. It’s in the frame itself, in line with the “v” in the crane.

Weird.

I can see your concern about the crack. If indeed it is a crack it most likely happened from someone continually opening the cylinder “ cowboy style” that is flipping it open after unlocking. I think a good gunsmith could stop drill and weld the area and remachine the original contour. I probably would not send it back to s&w because I doubt they would have a replacement frame and may not want to return it to you. Just my thoughts hopefully I’m wrong and it’s just a scratch. Good luck. Beautiful revolver.
