M28-2 Born On Date ?
Spotted what looks like a nice 6in M28-2 , with finger groove wood combat stocks ( which actually fit my hand ) .
The big issue to me is wether it is C&R eligible . S/N is N5931xx . I think it is close , can someone help me out here ?
Note , the S/N is now corrected to correct prefix of "N" .

That "D" is probably an "N". If it is an "S" you might be good. Joe

What is the advantage of C&R? I have a 28-2 with a N7489 serial No.

If you possess a C&R license, the gun can be shipped directly to you if it is of sufficient age. Thus, no need to go through a Class 1 FFL.

1. It is currently located 5 miles outside my state border .
2. My state has different legal procedures for C&R vs non C&R .

All S and N1 through N and five digits are C&R so any with 6 digits are past 1970 and dont qualify.

Without knowing the ship date it cannot be known for sure. An example is a 27-2 I have with serial # N 46994 shipped 5/4/1972.

I disagree with some posts that suggest N 5 digits are all C&R. I have some (but not all) of my N Frame revolvers Lettered (The Factory Letter from SWHF) and you can see below that some are 5 digit, some are 6, but the Model 25-2 is clearly not C&R (50 years old minimum) yet.
Model 25-2, s/n N245XX, shipped Feb 14, 1972 (5 digit)
Model 27-2, s/n N377XXX, shipped April 5, 1977
Model 29-2, s/n N798XXX, shipped Dec. 31, 1980
Model 28-2, s/n N237XXX, shipped 1974
"Pre Model 27", s/n S84XXX, shipped Oct. 16, 1952

I seriously doubt that ATF is drilling down on C&R transactions. If you are really concerned, you're going to have to ask Roy.
