Just got back from a range session. (local indoor ranges have finally opened) Took my newly acquired M58 along to function fire. Using factory 210gr jacketed rounds. Expected a BLAST and was not disappointed, WOW! Very accurate and recoil was as expected, not pleasant for the arthritis.

Won't be a regular range gun but sure is a beautiful weapon!

Glad you got a Model 58. Great revolvers and a really good cartridge.

I carried my Model 58 on duty for several years and I mostly shoot 210 grain cast bullets at about 900 fps through it. It's easy to reload for and as you note, very accurate.

I've had a Model 58 for about four years now. I suggest that you obtain some 210 lead rounds, either factory or perhaps you reload. I load my .41 cartridges to about 850 to 900 f.p.s. The recoil is noticeable but is in no way unpleasant.

As an aside, I favor target-sighted revolvers over conventional iron sights, the reason being that I pick up the sights better. That being said my 58 is among the most accurate of my revolvers. No problem holding shots within an 8" circle @ 25 yards.

P.S. As a concession to the arthritis, I moved to a set of
"Decelerator " grips on my 58.

My wife has arthritis in her hands and now carries a M66 instead of the j-frame she used carry just because the larger revolver doesn't require as painful a grip. She also enjoys my M58 and M29 with reasonable loads.

I have taken the magna stocks off of regular shooters. I found that a wider back strap made for a more comfortable shooting session.

My 58's run the gamut from mild SWC loads to serious 210gr JSP for hunting. My favorite stock style is the factory combat with finger grooves. They aren't cheap, but they make a huge difference to me.

I believe at least one of the ammo companies makes a toned down mid-range .41 Magnum. So if you don't reload, you may want to search for those. Of course if you reload, just tone it down yourself.

I also suffer from "arthuritis" as Fred Sanford used to say. I have gone to a Hogue unigrip and find it to work well for me. If you reload, try a 230 grain SWCGC bullet from Rim Rock over 8.5 grains of CFE Pistol. It has some recoil, but it isn't bad. You should see about 1000 fps from this load.

Georgia Arms produces a LSWC round at 800 fps. That feels like .38 Special in a Model 10. I have a local producer that makes a 215 grain LSWC at around 1100 fps, that is just about perfect for my Model 58.

Thanks for all the hints on loads and stock alternatives. I also suffer with dupuytrens contracture, which affects my grip and grip strength. I do reload and may consider gearing up to roll my own. Currently loading .45 ACP, .38 Spec/.357 Mag and 9mm, I load them all for comfort as well as accuracy; sometimes have to compromise.

First time ever shooting my M58. 100 ft, 8" paper plate.
I have no idea where the first round went.
I do know where the next five went.

I have Target Stocks on the majority of my guns. But for some reason I really like the Magna grips on my M58.



If I remember correctly the M58 Magna grips and the grips on the M520 are different from all of the other Magna grips.

I'll leave them on this one and its going with me next trip to the range.




This came with the gun when I acquired it.



So I bought 500 new casings and a good friend loaded 400 rounds for me.



And then I bought another 250 rounds from LAX.



And then my friend who loaded the first 400 rounds for me sent me two more boxes for Christmas.

So far I've only put 50 rounds thru it and I really enjoyed shooting it.

I hope to get back out there soon.
I need to get it dirty so I can clean it again.

I only have one and I got it a few yrs back . I lucked onto a pair of PC Magna's . Wouldn't change them out for anything else . My std load is a 210-220 swc over 8.5 grs of Winchester Super Field . It has plenty of power , easy on recoil and shoots very accurately and very clean . When Unique got hard to find , WSF was my Unique replacement . When I want some light target loads , using the same bullets Winchester Super Target gets the nod . Those 2 powders cover about 90% of my 41 magnum reloading . Regards Paul

My first handgun. Still have it. It takes very little time and shooting of the hot jacketed loads to use up my quotient of fun. Unless one is hunting relatively large game or likely to need the power for defense against large animals, a medium heavy SWC at 850-950 FPS will do just about anything you want without being obnoxious to shoot.
