Default Is this 65-3 worth the effort?

Shopping a bit on line. The Wheeling WV Cabela's is a regional warehouse, so they have a deep inventory of Gun Library things. Saw this 65-3 there. Overall condition is very good, but a previous owner messed it up. I'm not afraid to take a dremel and other tools to it to clean it up. $450.00. Is it worth it?

Adding a NO here as well. Plus, I expect Cabela's didn't give him more than about $200 bucks for it. No need to line their purse like THAT.

You could buy a new side plate but I still wouldn't give over $300 for that gun.

I wouldn't give anything for a gun that needed a dremel fix. Finding and fitting a side plate may be harder than you think.

Well you can laser weld the side plate and metal finish it and it would be gone
No reason to replace the side plate
Which we all know is a huge problem
your local jeweler can do that for you
Not that bad but I am not sure what these sell for so I can not comment in the price
I have fixed worse
Does not look that bad to me
Stay safe out there

$300 would be top dollar. The 65's are hard stainless and that looks deep.

No. Look harder, the cylinder and barrel look etched too.

The wheeling cabelas prices are all over the place. I got a 3” 65-3 there for $425. Mostly their prices are too high

Definitely not worth $450. With all that damage, $200 OTD and expect to spend another $200 getting it back into presentable condition.

A definite, and LOUD...****N...don't walk. With all things Cabelas these days you cannot even check the action without buying the firearm and getting it outside the store due to that "trigger lock policy".

The 65-3 pictured below was pretty darn "minty", no box, docs, or tools and I sold it very recently (3 days prior to Covid-19 lockdown) in a private face-to-face deal for exactly $400.

There are plenty of these fixed sights 65 out there, and like me, because I have a Model 66 (adjustable sights) I rarely took the 65 out for exercise.

Just my $0.02 worth.

You might be able to fix the side plate stupidity with a small 2-4oz ball peen hammer. With the side plate on something flat and heavy start tapping the etched area with the flat face keeping the face flat to the plate while tapping. The metal was not removed, but was moved. The light taps will move some of it back into place, making the "engraving" shallower. After you tap it, then reinstall the side plate using screws with the heads taken down flush to the top of side plate, and new slots cut in them. Use sand paper backed by a piece of flat bar to smooth the flat, then some grey scotch bright pad to even out the finish on the whole gun .

If you can buy it for $300 with a bunch of work you could have a $400 shooter

File this under buying someone else's problem! Why make it your problem? It will never be made right with a Dremel. There are fixes but the price doesn't reflect the true cost of a fix.

There are reasons Pawn Shop engraving was invented, another possible fix.

Like most others a definite No. Even if it was nice I no longer buy from them due to their anti 2A policies and ridiculous pricing. Move on and buy a nice S&W.

I would rather spend $600 for a very nice example than even $200 for that example at Cabelas.
