I did these photo's for a friend a few years ago. He called me today after suffering a slight stroke recently. He has lost most of his eyesight and is selling out his guns. He is giving me first dibs on this 357.

He has shot about 300 rounds thru it and scratched the knife sharpening it. I want it and I want to be fair to him what do you think?

Unfired sets of these have tended to sell in the $1100-1300 range, so to me about $1000 or so sounds about right in absolute terms. If he is a good friend, the extra $300 probably would be a nice gesture.

$1000 is fair to both parties.

I watched these for a long time, asking prices ranged from $900 to absurd figures like $1700+

If you're patient, you can grab them for under $1000 when a realistic seller is letting one go. I got mine last year for $950.

They're neat sets, grab it if you can agree on a fair deal!

And sorry to hear about your friend.

They just aren't worth that much. Maybe one day, but not today.

The sets are SLOW movers. I've seen them for $750 when just the revolver in plain blued finish were bringing that. May have moved up in the last yr or two, but I think they can be bought for $900 -950.

They are cool commemoratives. I see PSP ones turn up every now and again and am tempted, but PSP never carried the 19. I would think that with the revolver being fired and the knife being sharpened the value would be reduced drastically. Good luck and sorry to hear about your friend.

I think the allure of the Texas Ranger brand makes it perhaps a little more attractive than the typical commemorative, especially given it's tasteful stamp. So, a couple hundred more than a similar condition 19-3 in it's very own box. The knife could probably be polished up if the scratches are not too bad.

I have always been a big fan off the Texas Rangers. I worked with them in 93/94, I very much like the Texas Ranger Sesquicentennial Anniversary Model 19, I even own one of the deluxe models and you would be hard pressed to offer me enough money to get me to sell it

However, I think you guys are being overly generous on one that has been fired and has an unseen amount of damage to the knife.

So I am with SPEEDGUNNER on this. Based on what I have read and have seen so far I would be looking to buy that between $800 and $850

In excellent+ condition, with the revolver unfired since leaving the factory, $1,000+ is where it should be started on an auction site

If a friend of mine had a stroke and needed to sell some guns, I'd be generous, if I could afford to be. The revolver looks unfired, although the owner claims 300 rounds through it. I'm not big on buying guns to collect to invest in; I like shooting them. That being said, ask him what he wants for the set. They aren't ever going to make any more of them. They'd no doubt be worth more in Texas than Connecticut unless someone had a Texas connection, especially to the Rangers. Life isn't always about getting the best deal, especially where friends are concerned.

Several members have already pointed this out......the fact that the revolver has been fired and the knife has been sharpened reduces values to shooter/user values. That said I would be in the $650-$750 camp if presented to me. Simply stated the knife has no value to me so I'm buying the revolver to shoot and for me that would be top dollar on this one.

I really like this commemorative set. I think it is one of the best value-wise around. And, as colt_saa says, the deluxe models are superb. If I am not mistaken, there were 50 deluxe sets and each one was engraved slightly different. There was more than one engraver used too. I am not sure how many though. Maybe Rkmesa will show us some of his, so we can drool. I hope to get one of the standard sets at some point.

I sharpen things for a living. One of the things I tell my customers is the collectors want the factory edge not mine. If I or anyone else sharpens it correctly, the value drops by at least half. Scratch it up and you might as well give it as boot to the deal.

That said, for a sick friend, I would be generous.

AWESOME!!! To me, this commemorative gun is more like a custom engraved gun, than a regular commemorative gun. RKmesa does have a nice collection of them.

I absolutely agree, the Deluxe models are all hand engraved. There were multiple engravers and each gun has it's own special charm and beauty

When these were sold back in 1973, I think the Deluxe model was bargain priced

However, make no mistake the Standard set is also a pretty awesome Commemorative

In that era, many of Smith & Wesson's commemorative revolvers had Deluxe editions available. Often the first and last might be overly embellished with engraving, gold line work, Ivory stocks, etc.

A little late here but just this past weekend I sold locally the below gun for $800 for the gun only, as I purchased it (that's how I got it). It had been lightly fired, the gold flake had deteriorated, had it refreshed and I've put a couple hundred .38s through it. Excellent timing/lockup, great action but I found my tastes wandering.

I would love to have a similar vintage 19 with all the same features minus the special markings.

I've been tempted several times to purchase/bid on one of these Texas Ranger Commemorative M19's at auction sites because of reports on the great action work mentioned by S&W Fan. Did S&W give these commemorates some special work other than Ranger stamping?
Anyway, auctions seem to bring approx. $1000 for the set you mentioned. I also agree with others about treating your friend with special attention.

The trigger guard is relieved on the right hand side, has the target hammer and smooth target width trigger. No idea if the action received any additional attention but mine was very very smooth.

A commemorative has no special value to me. Used even less.

But to buy it from a friend (with a medical problem) I would have him value it. If he placed a value less then $1,000 I would give him the extra if I could afford it.

I purchased Commemorative Set TR6362 a year and a half ago for $825, and thought it was a fair price. The 19-3 had been shot and the knife had been sharpened, but I was looking for a "shooter" so it was OK with me. I also refinished the exterior of the presentation box because it was pretty scratched up. I agree that these sets do not appreciate very well, but then again you don't see a lot of them for sale. S&W only made 10,000 revolvers (8,000 sets) and only in 1973. I feel that the TR 19-3 is perhaps the finest fit and finished Model 19 that S&W ever made. I think that my set is easily worth between $900-$1000, although my intention is to pass it down to one of my sons. IMHO, in the set's condition, a fair offer to your friend would be $900.

I think they appreciate pretty well. The original selling price was $250 for the set. Your set looks very nice too.
